HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Ventura Eliminated by Mira Costa, 58-56

A 10-foot shot by Frank Zeno with three seconds to play lifted Mira Costa High past Ventura, 58-56, Tuesday night in a Southern Section Division II-A second-round playoff game at Mira Costa.

Anthony McCurtis scored 16 points and Darien Roberts added 15 for Ventura (22-4), the Channel League champion. The Cougars defeated Westlake, 82-72, in the first round.

Shane Willis scored 24 points and Zeno added 22 for the Mustangs (20-7).

In other Southern Section second-round boys’ basketball games:

Mater Dei 73, Quartz Hill 39--The Monarchs, ranked No. 2 in the state, needed but five minutes to reel off a 16-3 lead in a Division I-A game at Quartz Hill.

In front of Quartz Hill’s largest crowd of the season, Mater Dei (28-1) shot 69% (nine of 13) in the first quarter and 59% (29 of 49) in the game.

“Overall, I’m pretty pleased,” Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight said. “Anytime you go on the road--and this is on the road--it’s tough. We left at 12:30 for a 7:30 game.”

The Rebels turned the ball over four times in the first five minutes of the game.

All five Monarch starters--Kamran Sufi, Marmet Williams, Terence Wilborn, Miles Simon, and Dave Drakeford--scored during that 16-3 start. Simon scored a game-high 18 points.

Mater Dei led, 34-18, at the half and by no fewer than 22 from the 7:15 mark of the third quarter.

“It’s hard to say (if they’re as good as advertised) because we didn’t play well,” Quartz Hill Coach Steve Hurst said. “Without a doubt, they don’t have any weaknesses. They’re the best team we’ve seen all season.”

Quartz Hill finished 15-7.

Faith Baptist 73, Hesperia Christian 64--Host Faith Baptist assumed a permanent lead in the second quarter of the Division V-AA game.

Todd Weaver scored a game-high 23 points for the Contendors (15-11), including a pair of three-point baskets to key an 8-0 third-quarter run. Leonard Colon added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Montclair Prep 79, Providence 54--Jerome Joseph was 10 of 12 from the field and finished with 22 points to lead the Mounties (17-8) in a Division V-AA game.

Montclair Prep led, 29-17, at halftime and was never threatened in the second half.

Freshman Akil Anderson added 18 points for the Mounties, followed by Les Sweet with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Barry Dabbaghian scored a game-high 23 points for Providence (20-4).

Holy Martyrs 82, Templeton 75--Sako Balian had 25 points and 18 rebounds, and Ara Sayabalian and Shahan Kaprielian added 22 and 16 points for host Holy Martyrs (20-4) in a Division V-AA game.

Jeff Phillips had a game-high 28 points for Templeton (17-7).

Liberty Christian 75, Manoogian 60--Toby Curto led Liberty Christian with 24 points and six assists. Curto had 10 points in the third quarter to help Liberty Christian outscore Manoogian by 11 points and take a 17-point lead. Jason Trippet, who hit two three-point shots, had 16 points and five rebounds for host Liberty Christian (18-5).

Koko Korbekian had 23 points for Manoogian (11-6).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Calabasas 1, Bell-Jeff 0--Steve Thomas of host Calabasas (14-4-2) scored five minutes into the Southern Section Division V second-round match.

The shutout was the Coyotes’ seventh.

In other Southern Section second-round matches:

Bishop Amat 2, Buena 1--Matt Winecki scored the winning goal with 15 minutes to play in a Division II match at Buena.

Earlier in the second half, Thomas Trigo scored for Buena (17-2-3).

Matt Verti scored in the first half for Bishop Amat (13-11-2).

Arcadia 5, Notre Dame 2--Francisco Dongo scored his team-high 24th goal of the season and teammate Tim Webber added his second, but host Notre Dame (16-9-2) lost the Division III match.

Arcadia (12-9-3) led, 5-0, at halftime before Dongo scored midway through the second half. Webber’s goal came on a penalty kick with two minutes remaining.

The loss snapped a nine-match winning streak for Notre Dame, the third-place finishers in the Mission League.

Cabrillo 3, Moorpark 1--Pat Russo scored Moorpark’s only goal 10 minutes into the second half as the Frontier League champion.
