SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Purdom, Runnels Help El Modena Stun San Clemente

Nick Purdom scored three minutes into the second half to provide the winning margin as unseeded El Modena upset third-seeded San Clemente, 2-1, Tuesday in a second-round Division II boys’ soccer playoff game at El Modena High.

Jeff Runnels scored an unassisted first-half goal for the Vanguards (9-6-2), who advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals at Esperanza.

Mike Poirier scored for San Clemente (19-2-4) with 15 minutes remaining, and Triton goalie Mario Garcia had 11 saves.

In other Division II games:

Esperanza 3, Cerritos Gahr 2--Halfback Albert Raya scored three goals to lead Esperanza (15-2-5) into the quarterfinals. Raya scored the deciding goal on a header off a Peter Schumerth free kick with 11 minutes remaining.

George Allison had four saves for Esperanza. Frank Trovao had six saves for host Gahr.

Capistrano Valley 3, Villa Park 0--Brooke Humphrey, Scott Shoen and Marcoantonio Perez scored for Capistrano Valley (18-5-2), which advanced to a quarterfinal game against top-seeded Santa Ana Valley. Capistrano Valley goalkeeper Brian Beach made five saves. Villa Park finishes 7-9-5.

Santa Ana Valley 3, West Torrance 2--Forward Rafael Cabrera scored two minutes into the game for top-seeded Santa Ana Valley (23-3-2), and halfback Antonio Arredondo scored two unassisted goals to give the host Falcons a 3-0 lead at the half.

Luis Ruiz, who recorded nine saves for Santa Ana Valley, saved two of three penalty shots in the second half.

In Division IV boys’ soccer:

Corona del Mar 1, Norwalk Glenn 0 (OT)--Bill Rimmer scored eight minutes into overtime for Corona del Mar (19-1-6). The Sea Kings will play Hemet, a 3-2 winner over Riverside Poly, in the quarterfinals. Goalkeeper Brian Smith had four saves for the Sea Kings.

Saddleback 6, Temple City 0--Juan Arreola had two goals and two assists and Jose Rodriguez had two goals and one assist for host Saddleback, which advanced to the quarterfinals to play top-seeded Corona Centennial, a 3-0 winner over Bonita. Temple City ends 18-6-2. Eddie Lopez posted his 11th shutout for Saddleback (19-4-2).

Santa Margarita 2, Palm Springs 0--Kevin Cimini and Raphael Barragan scored for visiting Santa Margarita (23-1-3), which advanced to the quarterfinals to play Corona, a 4-3 winner over Riverside Norte Vista. Matt Reis had his 19th shutout of the season.

Sonora 2, San Dimas 1--Cory Witt and Paul Copeland scored for visiting Sonora (16-5-3), which will play the winner of El Monte-La Mirada in the quarterfinals.

In Division V boys’ soccer:

Orange Lutheran 1, Palos Verdes Chadwick 0--Eric Glessner scored the game’s only goal 25 minutes into the first half for host Orange Lutheran (11-9-2), which advanced to the quarterfinals to play Calabasas, a 1-0 winner over Burbank Bellarmine-Jefferson. Chadwick ends 9-8-1.
