After Canyon’s 1-0 victory in the second round of the Division II girls’ soccer playoffs Tuesday, the Comanches weren’t about to pat themselves on the back.

Moore League champion Long Beach Wilson also thought Canyon, which advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals against Kennedy, could have played better.

“They’re seeded second,” Wilson Coach Bill Myers said. “I was expecting to see something more fancy. They played kick ball. We made one mistake and they scored.”

But Canyon’s first-half goal more than made up for anything missing from its game plan. On the play in question, Krista Broughton streaked down the left side and waited until she had run a little past teammate Kim Campbell, who was standing just outside the goal box, to make the pass. Broughton’s timing on the cross was perfect and Campbell’s shot caught Wilson goalkeeper Lisa Colbert going the wrong way.

“Did you see that goal?” Canyon Coach John Williams said. “It was beautiful.”

Canyon made more of its fewer scoring opportunities.

“When we get the chance, we want to execute,” Campbell said.

Canyon (23-2) credited a stingy Wilson defense with limiting the Comanches, who took three shots to Wilson’s nine in the first half.

“We knew they were league champions and had gone 10-0 in league, just like us,” Williams said. “And we knew they were tough on defense, just like us.”

But unlike Canyon, Wilson (15-5-2) couldn’t put anything past Canyon goalkeeper Tina Thompson, who recorded her 20th shutout of the season.

“It was average, nothing great,” said Thompson, who will attend San Diego State on a soccer scholarship.
