SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Kathy Yam was anticipating overtime, but the West Torrance High coach’s hopes were crushed in the closing seconds of a 48-46 loss to Ridgecrest Burroughs Wednesday night.

Jenny Bates made two free throws with two seconds left to break a 46-46 tie in a Southern Section Division II-A second-round basketball playoff game at West.

With West trailing by two points, Laurie Shimizu scored on a layup to tie the score, 46-46, with six seconds left.

“We weren’t looking for a three-point shot,” Yam said. “We were looking to tie the score and hope for a foul and a three-point play to win.”

West, however, was the victim of a foul that set up Bates’ game-winning free throws.

With time running down, Katie Griffith fouled Bates in the backcourt to send the senior to the free-throw line for a one and one.

“I’m still in state of shock,” Yam said. “I know we would have won if we had taken it into overtime.”

West appeared capable of getting the job done in regulation.

The Pioneer League champion Warriors led by as many as nine points in the first half, but were plagued by foul trouble.

Shimizu, the Warriors’ leading scorer, was one of three starters with four fouls. The 5-foot-4 senior sat out most of the third quarter after picking up her fourth foul one minute 10 seconds into the second half.

The Warriors were leading, 23-18, when Shimizu left, and they maintained a 32-31 lead after three quarters.

“It was frustrating,” said Shimizu, who had nine points. “We didn’t play really well as a team. We should have tried a lot harder.”

Tracy Holman had 16 points, and Karen Kasper had 10 points and 12 rebounds for West (21-6).

Holman scored on a layup to put West ahead, 44-40, with 3:06 to play.

But Burroughs scored six points in a row to take a 46-44 lead on a basket by Laura Martin with 1:37 left.

Leslie Pyle had 15 points, and Lisa Moffitt added 13 points and eight rebounds for Burroughs, which will play Troy in a quarterfinal game Saturday.

The Warriors made eight of 11 free throws, including seven of eight in the first half to help open a 21-15 halftime lead against the Golden League champion Burros.

After trailing, 9-8, after the first quarter, the Warriors held the Burros scoreless for the first 5:07 of the second quarter.
