SPORTSCOPE : Toro Women Earn Berth in Playoffs

Junior guard Karee Bonde broke two of her school records Thursday night in leading the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team to a 61-52 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at San Luis Obispo.

Bonde made eight three-point baskets to break her record of six in a game. She has made 68 three-point shots this season to break her record of 66 set in 1991-92. Bonde finished with 24 points.

The Toros (15-9) clinched a berth in the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Assn. playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Toros are 7-4 in conference play. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is 11-13 and 5-6.

Dominguez Hills will play host to CCAA opponent Cal Poly Pomona at 5:45 p.m. Saturday in its final regular season game.

The Toros will play either Pomona or UC Riverside in the first round of the tournament on Thursday in Pomona.

Kelli Howell scored a career-high 19 points and Juanita Rivera had 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Gonzaga women’s basketball team to a 65-59 West Coast Conference victory over Loyola Marymount on Thursday night at Spokane, Wash.

Sheri Brown had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jamie Jesko and Martanya Blair added 10 points apiece for the Lions (14-10, 5-7).

Gonzaga (11-14, 6-7) scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 34-25 lead. Loyola cut the deficit to four with one minute seven seconds left, but Ivy Safranski made two free throws to secure the victory.

Loyola plays at Portland on Saturday night.

Hugh McCutcheon had 21 kills to lead eighth-ranked Brigham Young University to a 5-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-11 men’s volleyball victory over Loyola on Thursday night at Gersten Pavilion.

The Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will try to clinch a berth in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. postseason tournament when it plays host to Chapman in its regular-season finale at 8:05 p.m. Saturday.

The Toros (15-9) are in a three-way tie for third in the conference with Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona at 6-7.

A victory would give Dominguez Hills a berth in the four-team postseason tournament. If the Toros lose, they can earn a berth if Riverside beats San Bernardino and Pomona beats Cal State Los Angeles.

Chapman, playing its final game as a member of the CCAA before dropping from NCAA Division II to Division III next season, is 11-12 and 4-7.

Dominguez Hills beat Chapman, 92-79, on Jan. 30 in Orange.

The Panthers are led by guard Jeff Gardner, who ranks among CCAA scoring leaders with an 18.7-point average.

Dominguez Hills has been led by guard Raymond Bennett and forward Vincent Washington. Washington is averaging 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds and Bennett 13.5 points.

The Harbor College men’s basketball team will play host to Rancho Santiago in the first round of the Southern California regional playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Seahawks (15-14) are seeded 16th in the Southern California playoffs. They finished fourth in the South Coast Conference. Rancho Santiago (18-11) placed fourth in the Orange Empire League.

The Harbor College women’s basketball team (27-3) will play host to Valley College (30-4) Saturday at 5 p.m. in the second round of the state playoffs. The fourth-seeded Seahawks easily defeated Bakersfield College, 98-60, in a first-round game on Wednesday. Fifth-seeded Valley beat Santa Barbara, 80-53, in its first-round game.

Wendell Yoshida, the girls’ basketball coach at Peninsula High, was the only high school coach named to the staffs of four regional teams that will compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival women’s basketball competition this summer.

Yoshida, who guided Peninsula to the State Division I title last season, will serve as an assistant for the East team, which will be headed by Santa Clara women’s Coach Caren Horstmeyer.

Fidel Avendano will meet Armando Campas, and Marco Antonio Barrera will fight Ivan Salazar in co-main events Monday night at the Forum.

Avendano is 38-2 with 23 knockouts and Campas is 11-6-2 with seven KOs. Barrera is 22-0 with 16 KOs and Salazar is 12-5-1 with seven KOs. The card begins at 7:30.

Pool player Mike Massey, regarded as one of the world’s greatest trick-shot artists, will make his only Southern California appearance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at South Bay Billiards in Hawthorne.

Massey won the Daily Mirror World Trick Shot Championships in London in 1992. He is also a former national nine-ball champion and holds numerous nine-ball records.

The Gardena Recreation and Human Services Department is sponsoring a free golf clinic for youths and adults of all skill levels from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Dominguez Golf Course and Practice Center in Carson.

There will be golfing exhibitions and clinics that will focus on putting, chipping, driving and use of woods and irons.

Participants will also receive free refreshments and are eligible for a free range card and golf balls.

The Southern California Slo-Two-Pitch Softball Assn. is accepting applications for its men’s spring softball tournaments that start March 13 at Wilson Park in Torrance.

The cost is $190 a team.

Teams are guaranteed at least three games in each tournament. The tournaments will have C, D and recreation divisions.
