HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL / PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Dorsey Stuns North Hollywood

Guard Terell McKnight made six consecutive free throws in overtime to lift Dorsey to a 64-61 upset victory over North Hollywood in a City Division 4-A quarterfinal boys’ basketball game Friday night at North Hollywood.

North Hollywood, ranked No. 7 by The Times, tied the game, 56-56, in regulation when Fantasia Johnson scored a layup off a steal. Johnson led the second-seeded Huskies (25-2) with 19 points.

Dorsey, which finished third in the Southern League, was led by guard Davy Fortson, who had 22 points. The Dons, who play Washington in the semifinals Tuesday, are 14-10.

“Our league is very tough,” Dorsey Coach Kevin Gibson said. “This is something we’ve been going through since the (summer league).”

No. 4 Compton Dominguez 95, Santa Barbara 50--Center Chris Blanton had 15 points, nine rebounds, five blocked shots and four steals to lead the Dons (24-2) to a Southern Section II-AA victory over Santa Barbara (20-9) at Long Beach Jordan High. Bryan Pettis and Jamie Gillin added 19 points each for Dominguez.

No. 8 Thousand Oaks 64, Chino Hills Ayala 47--Forward Jason Hartman scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Lancers (25-1), who had four players in double figures in a Southern Section I-A game at Thousand Oaks. Ayala, which started the playoffs in II-A, is 20-7.

No. 10 Bellflower St. John Bosco 69, Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills 64--Senior forward James Cotton and junior guard Jelani Gardner scored 25 and 21 points, respectively, for the Braves (25-2) in a Southern Section II-A game at El Toro High. Trabuco Hills is 22-7.

No. 13 Torrance Bishop Montgomery 78, Paso Robles 61--Andre English scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the second-seeded Knights (23-2) to a Southern Section III-AA victory over Paso Robles (18-7) at Redondo High.

No. 14 Lynwood 86, Long Beach Wilson 83--Junior guard Joe Austin scored the last seven points of the game to lift the Knights (21-7) to a come-from-behind victory in a Southern Section I-AA game at Lakewood High.

Trailing, 79-76, Lynwood took control in the final two minutes. Austin finished with a game-high 22 points, and senior forward Nathan Ware added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Lynwood. Long Beach Wilson, an at-large entry from the Moore League, is 12-15.

No. 17 Westchester 74, Locke 70--Freshman guard Danny Walker scored 18 points to lead the Comets (22-6) to an overtime victory in a City 4-A game at Westchester. Jason Sanders and Cullen Countee added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Comets. Locke is 23-10.

No. 19 San Dimas 74, South Pasadena 47--Junior guard Jeremy Veal paced the Saints (24-3) with 27 points in a Southern Section III-A victory at Arcadia High. Veal made 13 of 14 field-goal attempts and had six assists.

Franklin 71, Jefferson 68--Sophomore center Johnny Sanders scored a game-high 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers (17-8) in a City 3-A game at Franklin. Hao Kuach and Tony Delgado had 12 points apiece for the Panthers.

Gardena Serra 74, Carpinteria 40--Senior guard Alex Davis led the Cavaliers (18-6) with 17 points, and teammates Akeli Jackson and Arthur Tate added 16 points each in a Southern Section IV-A victory over the Warriors (14-10) at Santa Barbara High.

Wilmington Banning 47, Lincoln 44--Guard Jason Pickett scored 20 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead the Pilots (15-12) in a City 3-A game at Eagle Rock High. Banning erased a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and held Lincoln (20-5) to only two fourth-quarter points.

Brentwood 52, Pasadena Poly 49--Guard Mark Kessler scored 18 points and made four three pointers to spark Brentwood (21-6) to a Southern Section V-AA victory at Pasadena Poly (18-7). David Newhall missed a three-pointer at the buzzer for Poly.

GIRLS

No. 7 Crenshaw 64, South Gate 56--Kim Howze scored 24 points and had nine rebounds and Cathleen Grice added 16 points to lead the top-seeded Cougars (22-2) to a City 4-A victory at Crenshaw. South Gate (19-5) trailed by as many as 17 points, but pulled within eight during the final two minutes. Michele Gonzalez and Nancy Maciel scored 11 points each for the Rams, who had five players in double figures.

North Hollywood 48, Marshall 30--Junior forward Darvena Merritt scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Huskies (20-6) won easily in a City 4-A game over Marshall (21-6) at North Hollywood.

Granada Hills Kennedy 56, Washington 53--Senior guard Shaneya Harris led the Cougars (18-5) with 29 points in a City 4-A game at Kennedy. Washington, last year’s 4-A champion, is 10-15.

Sepulveda Monroe 60, Bell 47--Dimara Haymond scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds, and teammate Deanna Nakamura contributed 11 points, 11 assists and seven steals to lead the Vikings (12-3) in a City 3-A game at Monroe. Anna Marquez added eight points and 12 rebounds for Monroe, which will play the Harbor City Narbonne in the semifinals Tuesday.
