OUTLOOK

In his first season as coach, Brouwer guided the Mustangs to a share of the league title with Laguna Hills. And expect the Mustangs and Hawks to battle for the title again this season. Brouwer has one of the county’s top pitchers returning in Smith, who won 10 consecutive games last season before losing to Corona del Mar in the first round of the playoffs. Smith, who is 6 feet 2, was 10-1 with a 2.67 earned-run average and 51 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings. Kaull, who’s coming out late after basketball season, will be the Mustangs’ other key starting pitcher. Defense and pitching kept the Mustangs competitive last season, but Brouwer hopes their offense improves. The Mustangs batted only .270 last season. “That’s not very high in comparison to other teams in the county,” Brouwer said. “Our offense is our weakness. We really don’t have a proven .400 hitter. I think Cervantes and Kerr have the ability to hit .400, and Fill could push .400 this year.” Beyersdoerfer, Poe and Marlow were promoted from the junior varsity.
