HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Newbury Park Edges Crescenta Valley in Thriller

Rich Adams was hit by a pitch on an 0-and-2 count with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to give Newbury Park High a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over Crescenta Valley in the semifinals of the Babe Herman baseball tournament in Glendale.

The Panthers (9-6), who have won eight in a row, scored twice in the fifth, then tied the score in the sixth with a five-run rally that was touched off by David Lamb’s solo home run.

The Falcons (8-4) threatened to retake the lead in the top of the seventh, but second baseman Shawn Adams robbed Adam Jacobsen of a hit with the bases loaded and got a force to end the inning.

In tonight’s final at 8 at Casey Stengel Field, Newbury Park will play the winner of Tuesday’s late semifinal between Chatsworth and University.

In other Babe Herman tournament games:

Alemany 6, Westlake 1--Ed Bushey went three for four and got the Indians started with a solo home run in the first inning in a consolation-bracket game.

Chris Tashima and Robbie Glenn each had two hits for Alemany (10-4).

Saugus 5, Canyon 3--Jeff Brown went three for four with two runs batted in to lead the Centurions (9-6) past Canyon in a consolation-bracket game.

In other baseball games:

Thousand Oaks 8, Santa Barbara 0--The Lancers improved to 3-0 in their own tournament behind a shutout by sophomore Tim Baron. Jamal Nichols homered for Thousand Oaks (9-6), which led, 4-0, after an inning.

Littlerock 10, Cabrillo 9--Littlerock advanced to the final of the eight-team Santa Barbara tournament after scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth in a game cut to six innings because of a time limit.

Sonny Tuft doubled home the tying run and Jorge Pacheco doubled home Tuft to cap the winning rally. Littlerock used four hits, two walks and two errors in the inning.

North Hollywood 9, Canoga Park 5--Ignacio Olmos went three for four and Rafael Cabrera went two for four with three RBIs to lead the Huskies in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Canoga Park’s season-high 14 hit attack was led by Javier Vasquez (three hits) and Gus Lomeli (two hits).

Monroe 4, Grant 2--Viking junior Joel Zamudio (5-0) struck out 15 and drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe (8-3, 5-1). Zamudio pitched a complete game and did not allow an earned run.

Santa Ynez 6, Village Christian 4--The Crusaders allowed five unearned runs in the first three innings in the North Santa Barbara tournament. Mike Spielman and Brian Rust were each two for three and David Gustafson (three runs) led off the game with a home run.

Channel Islands 6, Camarillo 4--Adrian Castellon led the attack by going two for three with two RBIs for host Channel Islands (6-6, 3-3) in a Marmonte League game. Raiders Sam Monroy and Fred Griscavage also had two hits each. Victor Bernal (3-2) earned the win.

Camarillo’s George Lopez went four for four.

Oak Park 5, Carpinteria 2--Eric Schultz went two for two with a two-run double to lead the Eagles (6-3, 3-1) past Carpinteria (1-3 in league play) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Eric Kane (3-1), a senior right-hander, allowed seven hits in the complete-game victory. Kane had eight strikeouts and walked two.

Kane and Mike Giunta each went two for three for the Eagles.

First Lutheran 7, South Bay Lutheran 2--Pitcher Joel Hernandez struck out 12 in his second complete game of the season, a one-hitter. The only hit was a fourth-inning double by Charles Hurd. Danny Magallanes provided all the offense First Lutheran needed, going three for four with a two-run homer and four RBIs.

Montclair Prep 11, Cheyenne 1--Sophomore Jared Sandler pitched a one-hitter and did not allow a ball to be hit to the outfield in a second-round Las Vegas tournament game called after five innings.

Chris Ferebee and Brian Stewart each went three for three. Darrell Dent had two hits and two RBIs.

Montclair Prep 11, Santana 2--Ethan Parker and Brad Fulmer each had three hits.

Winning pitcher Jeff Shapiro allowed one hit and also had two hits and two RBIs in third-round action of the Las Vegas tournament. The game was called after the Mounties sent 32 batters to the plate in four innings.

South Gate 5, Van Nuys 4--In a pool-play game of the L.A. Umpires tournament, Van Nuys left the bases loaded in the seventh inning, including the tying run at third.

The Wolves trailed at one point 5-0 but scored three runs in the sixth to pull within one.

Refugio Pulido went two for three with two RBIs for Van Nuys (4-9).

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 3, Marina 1--Sara Griffin notched her fourth complete-game win in two days in the championship game of the Righetti tournament in Santa Maria.

Griffin (11-0) had nine strikeouts, did not allow an earned run, and hit a solo home run. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The Pioneers are 14-0.

In an earlier semifinal, Yody Roache singled in Nicole Newheart in the top of the eighth, enabling Simi Valley to defeat Thousand Oaks, 2-1.

Simi Valley’s Griffin, Jessica Cunningham, Jenny Conmay, and Lisa Church were named to the all-tournament team.

Thousand Oaks 2, Los Altos 1--Nicole Ochoa’s run-scoring triple in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and helped the Lancers (8-4) clinch third-place in the Righetti tournament.

Jessie Davenport (2-0) allowed five hits and had four strikeouts.

Hoover 1, Fallbrook 0--Nancy Evans threw a one-hitter and drove in the run with a double in the third inning in the semifinals of the Orange Glenn tournament.

Evans, who had 18 strikeouts and retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced, allowed only a slap single in the third inning.

Hoover (13-0-1) defeated Mt. Miguel, 7-0, in an earlier quarterfinal behind Evans’ two-hit, 19-strikeout performance.

Hoover will face San Diego El Camino in today’s championship game.

El Camino Real 17, Kennedy 0--Jennifer Gould pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine, and Gretchen Vandenberg hit a two-run homer in the third for the host Conquistadores (9-3, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Oak Park 8, Bishop Diego 5--Shana Silverman and Kristin Becker each had two hits to lead the Eagles (5-3, 1-1) past host Bishop Diego in a Tri-Valley League game.
