BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Lasorda Giving Elster a Major Look

Calling it the “acid test,” Kevin Elster, fielded ground ball after ground ball for about 30 minutes at shortstop Wednesday at Dodger Stadium and impressed Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda and executive vice president Fred Claire. Lasorda said Elster, who is signed to a minor league contract, has greatly improved since spring training. He will report to San Antonio this week. “I know I have Tommy in my corner and I have faith that (I will make the club),” Elster said.

Claire said he is still looking at Elster as a backup to the slumping Jose Offerman, who batted .059 during the team’s latest trip. “I have confidence in Jose’s ability to hit,” Claire said. “He’s a good offensive player.”

Todd Worrell threw Wednesday for the first time in five days but said he is still only throwing with about 75% velocity and has “no idea” when he can get to full speed. “75% is quite a bit short of my being able to let the ball go,” said Worrell, who has been on the disabled list 21 days because of a pulled muscle in his forearm. “I can’t be worried about my arm out there.” . . . Vin Scully will be honored by the Richstone Family Center, a child abuse and treatment center, at a dinner June 8 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
