Deion Sanders said he left the Atlanta Braves because he was tired of not playing much, and he accused the club of “the worst betrayal by a team in all sports history.”

John Schuerholz, the Braves’ general manager, put Sanders on the disqualified list Thursday, saying he was told by the player’s agent, Eugene Parker, that Sanders was not returning to the team after having several days off to attend his father’s funeral. Schuerholz said he plans no disciplinary action against Sanders.

Sanders said his lack of playing time was punishment for his failure to sign a long-term contract. “How can they punish me for not signing?” he said. “I was giving them production and still sitting. He can’t hold that contract thing against me.”
