HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : A Perfect Day for Winchester and Canyon, 3-0

Senior Marianne Winchester pitched a perfect game and Canyon High moved into a first place tie in the Foothill League softball standings with a 3-0 victory over Burroughs of Burbank Friday at Canyon Country.

Winchester (10-6) struck out five and also went one for two, driving home a run and scoring another for the Cowboys (14-6, 6-2), who are deadlocked with Hart and Saugus for the league lead.

Earlier in the season, Winchester pitched a no-hitter against Hoover.

In other softball games:

Saugus 2, Hart 0--The Centurions (14-6-1, 6-2) had four of their seven hits in the eighth inning and scored twice to beat the Indians in Foothill League game at Newhall.

With bases loaded, Kelli Kranz’ run-scoring single drove in the only run Saugus would need. Jeanine Giordano followed with another single.

Harvard-Westlake 5, Chaminade 1--Tiffany Zwicker went three for three with four RBIs to lead the Wolverines (6-7, 1-6) in a Mission League victory. Zwicker hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to break open a 2-1 game.

Moorpark 35, Santa Clara 5--The Musketeers, who beat the Saints, 5-0, on Tuesday, pounded 24 hits in a Frontier League game at Moorpark. Cher Tinerillo scored seven runs and had five runs batted in, and Tina Milburn scored four runs and had 5 RBIs for Moorpark (12-5, 7-2).

BASEBALL

Glendale 7, Muir 0 (forfeit)--The Mustangs led, 4-2, in the bottom of the seventh inning when their two coaches were ejected for arguing a ball-strike call by the home-plate umpire, and Muir was forced to forfeit the Pacific League game because the team had no other administrator at the game in Glendale.

The Dynamiters (8-9, 4-7) had the bases loaded with none out when batter Frank Loera took a 1-and-1 pitch that the umpire called a ball. A Muir assistant was ejected for disputing the call then Muir Coach Mike Harrison was ejected.

In the fourth inning, Glendale pitcher David Sofro was hit in the head by a line drive. Sofro was examined at the scene by two doctors, left the game under his own power and went to a hospital.

Simi Valley 14, Camarillo 2--Simi Valley scored eight times in the sixth inning to break open the Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Kevin Nykoluk had four hits, three RBIs and three runs and Bill Scheffels added two hits, three runs and three RBIs for league-leading Simi Valley (20-2, 10-0). Bill Treadway limited the Scorpions (6-15, 2-8) to two hits over five innings to get the victory.

Hoover 9, Crescenta Valley 1--Gerald De La Pena (5-0) pitched a three-hitter, striking out six for the Tornadoes in a Pacific League game at Hoover.

Ron Pirayoff had three hits, including two triples, and four RBIs, and Nathan Dishington added two hits, including a three-run homer, and three RBIs for Hoover (14-5, 9-2). David Fielder had two hits for Crescenta Valley.

Buckley 10, Whitney 4--Taryll Jackson (4-3) went four for five with two home runs and five RBIs and threw a six-hitter to pace Buckley (8-8, 3-3) to a Delphic League victory.

Royal 12, Thousand Oaks 11--Gene Strojek’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Brent Egan with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of a Marmonte League victory for the Highlanders (12-8, 7-3).

Hart 9, Canyon 5--The Indians scored eight runs in the fourth inning at Hart, sending 12 batters to the plate, collecting five hits and benefiting from one error and three wild pitches.

Arron Dean had a two-run double and Darren Feeley doubled home three. Sophomore Luis Sanchez improved to 6-0 this season, 13-0 in his career.

Highland 4, Palmdale 2--Pinch hitters Abe Mia and Sean Riley both came through with two-out singles in the eighth inning, scoring Jim Reel and Tony Pulido in a Golden League game at Palmdale.

Freshman right-hander Jeremy Casteel, making his first varsity appearance, went the distance for Highland (9-8-1, 3-6-1).

Oxnard 4, Santa Barbara 3--Ruben Torres scored from first base in the 11th inning when Eric Terrill’s fly ball was dropped by the Dons’ center fielder.

Manuel Canales retired 17 batters in a row at one stretch and has gone 17 innings without walking a batter. He pitched nine innings, but the victory went to Brian Dillard, who pitched the 11th.

Bell-Jeff 6, La Salle 4--Freshman catcher Mark Dodd hit a three-run home run for the Guards (6-12, 1-5) in the top of the eighth inning of a Camino Real League game at La Salle.

Moorpark 10, Santa Clara 1--Brian Garrettson (5-1) pitched a one-hitter for the Musketeers (11-7, 6-3) and drove in two runs in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Camarillo 15-8, 15-5, 15-10--Josh Penrod led the Highlanders with nine kills and added four blocks in a Marmonte League match at Royal (14-0, 12-0).

Hart d. Canyon, 15-12, 6-15, 15-10, 15-10--Bryan Carichner had 19 kills and five blocks, and Chad Strickland added 12 kills, four blocks and three service aces for the Indians (14-0, 12-0) in a Golden League victory over at Canyon (12-2, 10-2).
