ROUNDUP : CLU Clinches Conference Title, 7-6

Ricardo Bernal scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth as Cal Lutheran handed Occidental a 7-6 defeat in the first game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader, clinching the conference title outright for the host Kingsmen.

With a squeeze play in progress, Cal Lutheran’s Edwardo Castillo missed a bunt attempt, but the pitch got away from the catcher and Bernal scored.

Louis Birdt, the Kingsmen’s second reliever, allowed one hit in the final three innings and picked up the victory.

Left-hander Pat Norville (6-1) threw a two-hitter in the second game as Cal Lutheran, top-ranked in Division III, completed a sweep of Occidental with an 8-0 victory.

In other college baseball games:

Canyons 6, Bakersfield 3--R.J. Simone pitched eight shutout innings as the host Cougars (26-8, 23-4) clinched the Western State Conference title outright.

Simone (8-0) allowed only four hits until Jason Chandler got the final two outs and picked up his third save.

Mission 16, Compton 3--Robert Garcia had five hits and three runs batted in, and Gary Matthews added four hits, five RBIs and three runs for host Mission in a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Cuesta 13, Ventura 10--The Pirates couldn’t rally back from Cuesta’s eight-run first inning that included four hits, two errors, three walks and one hit batsman.

The Master’s 2-13, UC San Diego 1-3--Chris Beck tossed a one-hitter in a seven-inning game in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader against visiting San Diego and The Master’s set a single-season school record for victories.

The Master’s improved to 28-20 in the second game. The previous Mustang record for wins (26) was set in 1990.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Chaminade 14-11, Faith Baptist 4-0--Casey Cote went seven for eight with eight RBIs to pace the Eagles (11-11) in a nonleague doubleheader sweep.

Chaminade’s Adam Crecion, a junior right-hander, tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in the second game.

Crespi 16, Harvard-Westlake 3--Visiting Crespi pounded out 20 hits, including three each by Casey Snow, Keith Evans and Kyle Carden, and improved to 10-0 in Mission League play. Jeff Suppan added two hits, included a three-run homer, for Crespi (20-2 overall).

Notre Dame 11, St. Bernard 4--Chris Garza slugged two homers, collected three hits and drove in six runs for visiting Notre Dame in a Mission League game.

Glen Carson added three hits for Notre Dame (16-4, 8-2). Rich Igou (4-1) went six innings and allowed three hits.

COLLEGE SWIMMING

Ventura College’s Damon Nygren placed third in the men’s 200-yard butterfly and Bettina Aubermann of Pierce took fourth in the women’s 100-yard freestyle at the California State Community College Swimming and Diving Championships at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Nygren posted a time of 1:58, while Aubermann finished in 54.69.

COLLEGE TRACK

Cal State Northridge senior Garrett Noel won the men’s javelin with a school record of 247 feet in the Northridge Open. Noel set the previous record of 244-9 earlier this season. Tannel House was CSUN’s lone double winner, claiming the women’s long jump (18-8 3/4) and triple jump (wind-aided 40-6 1/4).
