ROUNDUP : Sindle, Burbank Thwart Hart

Hart blew a chance to move into a first-place tie in the Foothill League by losing, 1-0, to Burbank on Friday at Burbank.

The Indians (16-8, 6-4 in league play) would have tied Burroughs, which lost to Saugus, at 7-3. Junior left-hander Brian Sindle led Burbank (8-10, 3-7) by pitching a four-hitter and driving in the game’s only run with a single in the fourth.

In other high school baseball games:

Thousand Oaks 4, Westlake 1--The Lancers’ Brian Downing pitched a four-hitter and didn’t walk a batter in a Marmonte League game at Westlake. Thousand Oaks is 15-9, 6-6. Steve Klein was two for three for Westlake (6-14, 2-10).

Montclair Prep 30, Paraclete 4--Jeff Shapiro homered twice while Brad Fullmer and Chris Ferebee each had one in the nonleague rout by the Mounties (18-4-1).

Fullmer has 14 home runs, putting him in a four-way tie for fourth on the Southern Section single-season all-time list and two behind record-holder Arnold Garcia, who had 16 while playing for Channel Islands in 1981.

Calabasas 12, Santa Clara 5--Senior first baseman David Jacobs was three for three with a home run and four RBIs, leading the Coyotes (13-4-1, 7-3) to a Frontier League victory at Calabasas. Calabasas remains tied for first place with Moorpark.

Palmdale 8, Antelope Valley 1--Todd Berry had 10 strikeouts and threw a three-hitter in a Golden League game at Palmdale (17-5-1, 9-3-1). Berry improved to 8-1. Jerome Payton’s three-run double capped a five-run third inning for the Falcons.

Channel Islands 6, Camarillo 4--Bob Peterson had two hits, including a home run, for the Raiders (9-10, 6-6) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo. The Scorpions (6-17, 2-10) had runners at first and second in the seventh, but Rene Sanchez kept them at bay.

L.A. Baptist 9, Marshall 6--The Knights (17-5, 9-2) clinched the Alpha League title with four runs in the second and four more in the fifth. Jeff Baumsteiger had a two-run home run in the second and Ryan O’Connell had a pair of doubles. Matt Hernandez (9-0) picked up the victory in relief.

Glendale 2, Crescenta Valley 1--David Sofro, who missed the last Dynamiter game while recovering from a line drive to the head, singled in the fourth inning to drive in what proved to be the winning run in a Pacific League game at Glendale (10-9, 6-7).

Glendale’s David Gantt (6-3) pitched a three-hitter. The Dynamiters have won five of their last six league games and are tied for third place in the league with Crescenta Valley (11-11, 6-7).

Hueneme 10, Dos Pueblos 1--Robert Ralfton went four for four with three RBIs to pace the host Vikings (12-10, 8-4) to a Channel League win. The loss dropped the Chargers (16-6, 8-4) out of a first-place tie and into a second-place tie with Hueneme, a game behind San Marcos.

Moorpark 7, Santa Paula 3--Richard Hernandez pitched a complete game, striking out seven and walking none in a Frontier League game at Moorpark. Rick Collier, Brandon Garrettson and Bill Finnerty each had two hits for Moorpark (13-7, 7-3).

Oxnard 3, Ventura 2--Ventura’s seventh consecutive Channel League defeat came after the potential tying run was cut down at the place twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Littlerock 5, Quartz Hill 1--A two-run single by Manuel Gonzalez put the Lobos ahead in the second inning, keying an upset of the league-leading Rebels. Gonzalez (1-2) allowed three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Hoover 9, Pasadena 4--Chris Butler’s three-run double highlighted a six-run second for Hoover. Doug Jackson and Gerald De La Pena (6-0) combined for 12 strikeouts as Hoover (16-5, 11-2) moved one game closer to a Pacific League championship.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Fairfax d. Poly, 15-4, 11-15, 15-13, 16-18, 15-13--The second-seeded Parrots were upset by seventh-seeded Fairfax in the quarterfinals of the City Section 3-A Division playoffs. The Lions were led by Dave Josephsen and Victor Tam. Josephsen had 41 kills, Tam 26.

Ventura d. Buena, 15-1, 15-7, 15-7--Eduardo Plascencia led the Cougars with 12 kills in a playoff tiebreaker to determine third place in the Channel League. Ventura (10-5, 8-5) secured the league’s third playoff berth.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL

Canyon 6, Burbank 0--Junior Kristen Mills pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks, leading the Cowboys to a Foothill League victory at Burbank. Kassie Lemasters and Nadine Ivanovsky each had two hits for Canyon (17-6, 8-2).

Calabasas 1, Santa Clara 0--Melissa Krolik pitched a two-hitter and stole home for the Frontier League game’s only run at Santa Clara. Krolik (10-6) had six strikeouts for Calabasas (10-6, 5-5).

Burroughs 5, Saugus 1--Lisa Hernandez pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and Gina Punaro and Catherine Rang each had three hits for Burroughs (7-14, 3-6) in a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Moorpark 6, Santa Paula 2--Karen Richter’s two-run triple highlighted a five-run sixth inning for the Musketeers, who pulled into a first-place tie with Santa Paula in the Frontier League. Both teams are 9-2.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 13, Hart 5--The Bulldogs (17-3, 12-0) won their sixth consecutive Foothill League title over the visiting Indians, and are 60-2 in league play since 1988. Senior Doug Young won all three of his singles sets, 6-1, to finish undefeated in league play over the last two years. Hart (15-4, 9-3) finished second.

MEN’S TENNIS

One Pierce College singles player and one Pierce doubles team earned automatic seeds for next week’s state tournament by winning in the round of 16 in the Southern California Regional Championships at Southwestern College.

Sixth-seeded Al Martinez defeated Mike Melosch of Grossmont, 6-4, 6-1. Philip Leonhardt and Vanja Nadali advanced in doubles.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD

Mission League finals--Jesse Stern of Harvard-Westlake won the pole vault at 15 feet 3 inches and Notre Dame freshman Eddie Miller cleared a personal-best 6-8 to win the high jump at Cal State Northridge.

Louisville’s Shalluin Fullove was a double winner in the 1,600 and 3,200, running personal bests of 5:19.91 and 11:55.32.

HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

Frontier League Swimming Championships--Calabasas swept both the boys’ and girls’ titles, which were hosted by Santa Clara at the Carpinteria City Pool.

Ken Crow won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle (23.35 and 51.81), and Eric Chun captured the 100 butterfly in 55.78, to pace the Coyotes boys’ team. For the girls, Becky Hilton matched Crow’s effort, winning the 50- (27.33) and 100-yard (1:00.88) freestyle, and Erina Kwon placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:30.54) and 500 freestyle.
