AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Five Homers Power the White Sox, 13-2

The Chicago White Sox scored six runs in the first two innings against rookie Mike Hampton and beat the Seattle Mariners, 13-2, at Seattle on Monday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

Robin Ventura (first inning), Frank Thomas (fourth inning) and Dan Pasqua (ninth) each hit two-run homers for the White Sox. Michael Huff and Bo Jackson also homered, against reliever Dennis Powell, during the ninth. It was Jackson’s second home run in three days.

The White Sox last hit five home runs in a game on Aug. 21, 1991, against Detroit.

Alex Fernandez (4-2) lowered his earned-run average to 1.88. He gave up one run and seven hits over eight innings to help the first-place White Sox win for the 11th time in 13 games.

Hampton (1-2), the youngest player in the major leagues at 20, lasted only 1 1/3 innings.

Texas 7, Oakland 4--Juan Gonzalez homered in his third consecutive game as the Rangers sent the Athletics to their third loss in a row at Oakland.

Gonzalez’s 10th home run of the season gave the Rangers a 5-0 lead during the third, one inning after Dean Palmer hit his ninth. Both were against starter Ron Darling (0-2).

Charlie Leibrandt (4-1) cruised through every inning except a three-run fourth.

Detroit 2, New York 1--Gary Thurman’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Tigers past the Yankees at Detroit.

Tony Phillips started the 10th with a walk and was bunted to second by Lou Whitaker. After an intentional two-out walk to Cecil Fielder, Rich Monteleone (3-2) walked Kirk Gibson before Thurman lined a single to right.

Bob MacDonald (3-0) pitched the final two innings for the Tigers, giving up one hit.

Baltimore 2, Boston 1--Mark Leonard’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly lifted the Orioles past the Red Sox at Baltimore.

Leonard, who remains hitless, has three sacrifice flies in four games since he was brought up from triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

Brady Anderson opened the Oriole eighth with a single against Paul Quantrill. Tony Fossas replaced Quantrill (2-2) and gave up a single to Mark McLemore.

Ken Ryan relieved and walked Cal Ripken Jr. before Leonard hit a fly ball to right that brought Anderson home from third.

Todd Frohwirth (2-2) entered in the eighth and got one out in the ninth before Brad Pennington earned the first save of his career.
