BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Are Davis’ Days in L.A. Almost Over?

Share

The much-publicized tandem of Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis may be on its last leg. The talk within the Dodger organization about giving up on Davis is growing stronger.

Davis, who is batting .216 with 10 runs batted in and one home run, has been inconsistent at the plate all season. He has played well in the field and excelled on the basepaths, with 12 stolen bases in 12 attempts to extend his streak of consecutive steals to 26.

But every day that Davis is on the active roster costs the Dodgers about $5,400--in addition to his guaranteed $1-million salary.

Davis, however, says he doesn’t even think about the Dodgers giving up on him. “That’s not on my mind,” he said.

Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda blasted the players in a team meeting held before Wednesday’s game.

“We all should be mad,” Strawberry said. “We are a much better team than this.”

But Strawberry said it is hard for him to get mad, since he has to worry more about getting healthy so he can start playing. “If I were playing every day and this was happening, I would be mad,” he said. “But if I were playing, we would be much better.”

Jody Reed did not play Wednesday because of sinus problems; it is the first game he has missed all year.
