Valery Calkins of Thousand Oaks High won two events--the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 freestyle--and swam the second-fastest high school time in the nation this year in the 500 in the Southern Section Division I swimming championships at Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach on Friday.

Calkins, who will attend South Carolina next year on a swimming scholarship, turned in the top performance by an area swimmer at the meet.

She won the 200 in 1 minute 49.82 seconds and the 500 in 4:51.01.

“It feels good,” Calkins said. “I expected to win the 200 but the 500 was a tossup.”

Calkins outdueled Sarah Nichols of Rio Mesa in the 500. Nichols lurked one-half body length behind Calkins the entire race, but could not overtake her. Nichols finished third in 4:51.71, being edged out for second place by 1/100th of a second.
