Loyola Splits Doubleheader With Pepperdine

The Loyola Marymount baseball team split a doubleheader with West Coast Conference rival Pepperdine on Saturday, losing the first game, 14-3, but winning the nightcap, 9-6, at Westchester.

The Lions’ Mike Peters went five for nine, scored three runs and drove in two in the doubleheader. Jesse Ibarra hit his 17th homer.

The Lions finished 23-33 and 14-16 in the WCC. Pepperdine, which has earned a berth to the NCAA playoffs, is 40-14 and 24-6.

The Southern California Tennis Assn. is offering free tennis clinics for youths ages 8 to 17 starting July 5.

The program, which is designed for underprivileged youths, will be staged at Veterans and Victoria parks in Carson, Centinela and Rogers parks in Inglewood, Del Aire Park in Hawthorne, Peck Park in San Pedro and Banning Park in Wilmington.

Participants will receive 18 hours of instruction, a T-shirt and a one-year United States Tennis Assn. membership.

The program is sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation.
