Readers Come to the Defense of North Torrance Baseball Coach

Share

This letter is in response to the letter to the editor by Michelle Schelske.

It’s easy to take shots at the coach of a struggling program. I’ve been a high school coach in the area since 1979. I’ve known North Torrance baseball Coach Dan Campbell since I coached him as a sophomore at Bishop Montgomery. To suggest he’s waiting to be handed a great team or doesn’t support youth baseball in the area is utter nonsense.

Campbell is a teacher and student. He also coaches in the football program at North, which takes an enormous amount of time during the summer. I’ve watched him coach his players. They are excited and enthusiastic. All The Times’ article stated was that a successful program takes time (to develop). That’s not sugarcoating. That’s reality.

Schelske (stated that her) people would love to volunteer, (but) where were they while the team struggled this spring? Loving to help and doing it are worlds apart.

Schelske (stated) that several parents she had talked with will keep their children out of North because of the baseball staff. This selfish Little League politics is a poison pill to any sports program.
