Esperanza’s Meek Reportedly ‘Fine’ After Surgery

Share

Esperanza football Coach Gary Meek, 44, underwent double-bypass surgery Tuesday and is “doing fine, with no complications,” according to his wife, Sharon.

The operation was performed at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton. Meek is expected to be moved out of intensive care today and be home by the weekend.

Meek, who had remained active and physically fit, never complained of pain but did admit to being tired, his wife said.

Meek had gone to his pharmacy for medication for an angioplasty performed on him five years ago. The pharmacist advised him to speak to his doctor, Dr. Dan Landa, who put Meek on a treadmill. The subsequent angiogram showed blockage of the same artery that had been treated five years ago. Instead of trying to treat it with medication, surgery was advised.

“He was in such good shape,” Sharon Meek said, “he thought he would go into the hospital as an outpatient .”
