Shaw’s .500 Average Yields 1st-Team All-State Honors

Andy Shaw of College of the Canyons, the Western State Conference player of the year, has been selected to the All-State first team chosen by the California Community College Baseball Coaches Assn.

His teammate, Ted Kiester, and Oxnard’s Nick Frank were named to the second team.

Shaw, a sophomore from Montclair Prep, was the Western State Conference player of the year after winning the triple crown with a .500 batting average, 12 home runs and 48 runs batted in.

Kiester, a freshman third baseman from Hart High, batted .383 with three home runs and 32 RBIs during the regular season. Frank, a sophomore outfielder from Camarillo High, batted .421 with 17 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.

The three players also were selected to the All-Southern California first team, along with Mission pitcher Josh Brown and Glendale first baseman Mickey Moreno. The second-team selections included Jose Gallegos and Richard Avalos of Mission, R.J. Simone and Keith Halcovich of Canyons, and Valley’s Willie Rivera.

Brown, a right-handed sophomore from Birmingham High, was 11-3 with a 3.11 earned-run average. Moreno, a sophomore from Hoover High, batted a team-high .433 with four home runs and 41 RBIs.

Gallegos, a sophomore second baseman from Sylmar High, batted .306 with five home runs and a team-high 40 RBIs and teammate Avalos, a sophomore outfielder from San Fernando High, batted .331 with a team-leading six home runs and 33 RBIs.

Halcovich, who hit .338 with 30 RBIs, was picked as designated hitter and Simone, a right-hander from Hart, was 9-0 with a 2.11 ERA in WSC games. Rivera, a sophomore right-hander from Burbank High, was 8-2 with a 2.59 ERA in the same conference.
