Dishington Named Pacific League Player of Year

Hoover High catcher Nate Dishington was named Pacific League player of the year. Dishington, a left-handed hitter, batted .528 with 10 home runs and 45 runs batted in. He was seven for seven in the playoffs.

Dishington, who has signed a football scholarship to play quarterback at Fresno State, is expected to be among the first area players taken in the major league draft, which begins Thursday.

Greg Shepard and Andy Hodgins of Cal State Northridge were named to the All-Western Regional team. Shepard hit .313 (five for 16), scored four runs and drove in a run in the Matadors’ three playoff games. Hodgins had four hits, drove in three runs and scored twice.

L.A. Baptist pitcher Matt Hernandez was named Alpha League player of the year.

A junior right-hander, Hernandez was 10-0 with a 1.83 earned-run average and 78 strikeouts in 72 2/3 innings. Hernandez also hit .368.

Wrestling

Agoura High wrestler Sean Burns signed a national letter of intent with Boise State, which competes in wrestling in the Pacific 10 Conference.

Burns, a 171-pounder, was 48-2 this season and won the Southern Section Division I title, the Southern Section Masters championship, and had a ninth-place finish in state competition. He was 101-15 in his career. Burns also was recruited by Nebraska, Clemson, Fresno State and Cal State Bakersfield.

Softball

Three players from Cal Lutheran have been selected to the Academic All-District VIII team. Cheryl Aschenbach, a senior catcher from Reseda, has a 3.74 grade-point average in physical education. Alyes Mathews, a senior with a 3.29 GPA in biopsychology, was among four infielders named to the squad. Laree Reynolds, a junior from Newbury Park, was among three outfielders. She has a 3.50 GPA in liberal arts.

Track and Field

Jessica Barraza of Saugus High has made a commitment to Harding University, an NAIA school in Searcy, Ark.

Barraza finished third in the girls’ 1,600 meters in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College on Friday to qualify for this weekend’s state championships.

She has personal bests of 5 minutes 6.35 seconds in the 1,600 and 2:21.2 in the 800.

Tennis

Meilen Tu of Northridge was eliminated from singles but advanced in doubles in junior division play Tuesday in the French Open in Paris.

Tu lost her second-round singles match to Laurence Courtois of Belgium, 6-4, 6-4. In doubles, Tu and Amanda Basica of Lomita defeated Magali Benitez of Paraguay and Silvia Talaja of Croatia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, in a second-round match.

Football

J. J. Lasley, a former Crespi High and Stanford running back, has signed as a rookie free agent with the Green Bay Packers, the NFL team announced Tuesday.

Volleyball

Coley Kyman of Cal State Northridge will play for the U.S. men’s volleyball team in this summer’s World University Games in Buffalo, it was announced Tuesday.

This will be the third international competition for Kyman, who went to Reseda High. He also played in the Pan American Games and World University Games in 1991.
