TODD WINES 50-Yard Freestyle Santa Ana Valley, Sr. Third-place in 1992 left a bad taste in Wines’ mouth. He swam faster--21.11 compared to last year’s 21.31--and smarter in 1993. He was also third in the 100 free.

MATT CORNUE 100-Yard Freestyle Villa Park, Jr. Three swimmers vied from start to finish in a race Cornue was hungriest to win. Cornue, second in the 200 free, was .07 seconds better than Marina’s Jon Kenyon.

JOHN SIMMONS 200-Yard Freestyle El Toro, Sr. Simmons won the 100 free, 100 back last year. Another double was possible until a national record fell in the 100 back. His 200 time was 1:39.97.

MARK PERKINS 500-Yard Freestyle Huntington Beach, Sr. Perkins bettered his 1992 showing (4th) and time (4:38.09) in this event considerably. His 4:33.39 was 3 1/2 seconds faster than the runner-up. He was fourth in the 200.

JEFF NICHOLS Diving Laguna Hills, Jr. Nichols’ victory was doubly significant. It was instrumental to his team’s Division III team title and he broke an 11-year-old section record by scoring 517.15 points.

DERYA BUYUKUNCU 200-Yard Individual Medley, 100-Yard Backstroke Woodbridge, Jr. Buyukuncu’s races rocked the meet. His 200 IM of 1:49.78 was .65 seconds shy of the section record, but his 47.84 in the back was a national standard.

PETE STRUGLINSKI 100-Yard Breaststroke Mission Viejo, Sr. Struglinski didn’t struggle en route to this title. He dropped three seconds off his prelim time to win in 56.69. His closest competitor was more than two seconds slower.

ROBERT DELGADO 100-Yard Butterfly Mission Viejo, Sr. In his final high school meet, Delgado went out in style, nipping Frank Tsai of Huntington Beach at the wall, (50.48 to 50.73) in one of the section’s best races.

JON KENYON (Sr.), MATT BRAUN (Sr.), BRIAN AKIAN (Sr.), PAUL LIEGEOIS (Jr.) 200-Yard Freestyle Relay Marina This was the only event Marina won in the section meet, in 1:25.90, but it helped propel the Vikings to their first team title.

JON KENYON (Sr.), BLAINE MORGAN (So.), JASON KLICK (Sr.), BRIAN AKIAN (Sr.) 400-Yard Freestyle Relay Marina Marina was second to Dos Pueblos in the section meet, but at 3:10.52 was five seconds faster than Sunset League championship time.

ROBERT DELGADO (SR.), PETE STRUGLINSKI (Sr.), BRAD KAUP (Jr.), KARL HYDROSS (Fr.) 200-Yard Medley Relay Mission Viejo The Diablos were seeded first in the finals and held off a late surge by Woodbridge to finish in 1:35.66 and avoid the upset.

Jason Klick. Time: 21.36. Klick’s sprint speed proven here--he was third--and again as relay anchor. Jon Kenyon. Time: 46.41. He was second here, led off a second-place relay, anchored a winning one. Matt Cornue. Time: 1:40.13. Only John Simmons was faster (.16) than Cornue, who later won the 100. Tim Haney. Time: 4:35.26. Division II runner-up in this event also won the 200 IM in 1:54.01. John Simmons. Time: 50.65. Hyped Simmons-Buyukuncu showdown quickly became race for second. Jay Judson. Time: 57.72. Won this Division II event, fourth in 200 IM lifted team to second. Frank Tsai. Time: 50.73. After disappointing 200 IM, Tsai found his form--and second place--in fly. Mark Kwok. Time: 1:53.82. Kwok picked up two seconds, helped key his team’s Division III team title. 200 freestyle relay, Mission Viejo. Time: 1:27.24. Robert Delgado (Sr.), Ahmad Filsoff (So.), Andy Davis (Jr.) and Brad Kaup . (Jr.). Top-seeded Diablos weren’t able to improve on prelim time and paid for it. 400 freestyle relay, Corona del Mar. Time: 3:11.47. Adrian Strezlow (So.), Thad Buzolich (So.), Crosby Grant (Jr.) and Rob Hoover (Sr.). Third-place finish in section meet and a personal best time for the season. 200 medley relay, Woodbridge. Time: 1:36.14. Andrew Lazenby (Jr.), Sean Moore (So.), Derya Buyukuncu (Jr.) and Dawson Hughes (So.). With everyone back, Woodbridge shouldn’t let Mission win in 1994. Jason Hubbart. Score: 503.00. Hubbart shook off second-place finishes of past to take first in 1993.
