A Classic Ending to the Season : Preps: The area’s top seniors gather to compete in all-star baseball and softball games.

Many of the area’s top seniors will participate in the 24th annual South Bay All-Star Baseball Classic tonight and the first South Bay All-Star Softball Classic on Saturday night. Both games start at 7 at Recreation Park in El Segundo.

Tonight’s baseball game features 32 players, including five seniors who earned player-of-the-year honors in their respective leagues. The Blue team includes Carson pitcher Jason Cole and Banning catcher Joe Gama, two of the tri-most valuable players in the Pacific League, as well as West Torrance pitcher Mike Myro, a seventh-round draft pick of the Houston Astros. Coaches for the Blue team are Jim Beaumont of Mira Costa and Greg Goode of Hawthorne.

Four of Beaumont’s Mira Costa players were selected to the game, but will not play because their prom is tonight.

The Red team features San Pedro pitcher Larry Cannon, tri-MVP of the Pacific League; Leuzinger catcher Gustavo Rubio, Bay League MVP and a 42nd-round pick of the Dodgers; El Segundo second baseman Jim Zambarelli, Pioneer League MVP; and Carson shortstop Ben Padilla, drafted in the 32nd round by the Dodgers. John Stevenson of El Segundo and Mike Kline of Carson will coach the Red team.

Saturday’s softball game features four players from City Section 4-A Division champion San Pedro among its 32 participants. Pirate third baseman Amie Roberts and teammate Diane Marshall, an outfielder, will play on the Blue team, which also includes standout pitcher Deanna Guerrero of Torrance. Jim Carrico of West and Mike Tom of Peninsula are the Blue team coaches.

Catcher Lisa Hebert and outfielder Michael Ahumada of San Pedro will play on the Red team with pitchers Ompa McKenna of Banning and Jennifer Sponsler of Carson. San Pedro defeated McKenna in the City 4-A final and Sponsler in the semifinals. Howard Williams of El Segundo and Kathy Blankenship of Banning will coach the Red team.
