One thing is certain, Richard Hernandez and Larry Bumpus will be worn out tonight.

Hernandez, a Moorpark High senior, will begin his day at 10:30 a.m. by pitching in the first game of a Ventura County all-star doubleheader at Ventura College. Bumpus, an Oxnard senior, will play in the second game at 3 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m., they will face each other in the Ventura County all-star football game at Ventura High. Hernandez will start at cornerback for the East team and Bumpus at running back for the West.

“I knew I wanted to (play in) both,” Hernandez said, “but I didn’t think they’d be on the same day.”

Hernandez will start for the Frontier League team against a team of Tri-Valley League seniors in the baseball game. Bumpus will play in the second game, which matches Marmonte and Channel League seniors.

Hernandez won’t be around for that one. “I’m going to go home, relax, eat and watch TV,” said Hernandez, who was 5-2 with a 2.02 earned-run average and batted .359, earning Frontier League co-player of the year honors.

Bumpus will do Hernandez one better, though. He is playing in the county all-star basketball game later this month.

Football is Bumpus’ main sport, though. Bumpus, a three-year starter who played quarterback and running back, rushed for 887 yards and scored 10 touchdowns for the Yellowjackets. He has signed with Oregon.

Dick Billingsley, who led Oak Park to a 7-4 record in his third year as head coach, will coach the East. The West is coached by Cliff Farrar, who directed Nordhoff (11-2) to a second consecutive Frontier League championship. This is the first head coaching position in an All-Star game for both coaches.

“Dick and I have played each other during the regular season the past three years so we know a bit about the way each other works,” Farrar said. “We look on paper to be pretty evenly matched.”

The East offense will feature quarterbacks Eric Bennett (3,094 passing yards, 34 touchdowns) of Simi Valley and Brian Field (1,076 yards, eight touchdowns) of Westlake. “We want an offensive type of game with real high scoring, and we plan to do a lot of that,” Billingsley said.

Tailbacks Quincy Jacobs (106 carries, 567 yards) of Thousand Oaks and Michael Streeter (128 carries, 783 yards) of Royal will be joined by fullbacks Brian Lister (75 carries, 394 yards) of Santa Paula and Manfred Wagner (58 carries, 265 yards) of Thousand Oaks.

Nose guard Jason Sandel (6-1, 215) of Camarillo, safety Derek Newcomb (6-2, 195) of Royal, and linebackers Mike Prchal (6-2, 200) of Royal and Gerardo Sandoval (5-10, 200) of Fillmore will anchor the East defense.

The Frontier League’s leading passer, Nordhoff’s Steve Saum (1,497 yards, 22 touchdowns), and Buena’s Aaron Triana (1,387 yards, 11 touchdowns) will play quarterback for the West.

The West starting backfield includes Bumpus, fullback Devon Passno (153 carries, 1471 yards) of Ventura, and slotback Adam Blundell (136 carries, 694 yards) of Nordhoff. Buena’s Lance Caldwell (42 receptions, 746 yards) will be positioned at wide receiver.

The baseball doubleheader format is new. In the past, one game was played pitting teams from the north and south portions of the county. The coaches representing the four leagues agreed to the two-game format because it allows more players to participate.

Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers, whose team advanced to the Southern Section Division I championship game Wednesday night, has had one practice with his Marmonte League all-star team in preparation for today’s game.

Simi Valley right-hander Bill Treadway (8-0, 2.13) will start. He will be backed by a lineup that includes four of his teammates--catcher Kevin Nykoluk (.467, 10 home runs, 50 runs batted in), shortstop Ryan Briggs (.347), outfielder Aaron Whitley (.362) and second baseman Britten Pond (.532, 47 RBIs).

Newbury Park shortstop David Lamb (.413), a second-round draft choice of the Baltimore Orioles, Thousand Oaks outfielder Jamal Nichols (.455) and Camarillo catcher Colby Keener (.321) also will play for the Marmonte League.

Buena Coach Stan Hedegard, who will coach the Channel League team, will start Brandon Knight (6-2, 2.05), a Buena pitcher drafted by the Colorado Rockies. Buena third baseman Gary Paul (.426), Ventura infielder Danny Lopez (.394) and Ventura outfielder Lyle Camarillo (.394) also will play.

Hedegard said the new format will benefit the Channel League because players from Santa Barbara schools can now play, including four from Dos Pueblos, which lost in the Division II championship.

Calabasas Coach Scott Drootin’s Frontier League team will include first baseman David Jacobs (.403) and pitcher Todd Cignarelli (5-1, 2.17) of Calabasas and Santa Clara catcher Larry Castenada.

Fillmore’s Tom Ecklund, who is coaching the Tri-Valley team, has not decided on a starting pitcher. His team will include Fillmore pitcher-outfielder Louie Garza (.437, 7-2, 2.14), St. Bonaventure catcher John McNamara (.357) and Oak Park catcher Damin Sterling (.420).
