AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL : Woodland Hills West Wins in 9th

Woodland Hills West rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to pull out an 11-8 victory over Newhall Saugus in a District 20 game Saturday at Saugus High.

Danny Cato and Scott Minker each homered and had three hits for Newhall-Saugus (2-1-1). Brian Eggleston added two hits and two runs batted in for Newhall-Saugus.

In other District 20 games:

Van Nuys South 5, Sunland-Tujunga 2--Shawn Smith improved to 3-0 in district play, allowing six hits and two runs in seven innings. Adam Frank, Justin Salazar, Dave Forst, Mike Weiss, Mark Scorza and George Martinez each had two hits for Van Nuys South (5-1).

Sepulveda 14, Encino 4--Darryl Dent had three hits, three RBIs and four stolen bases for Sepulveda in a District 20 game called after eight innings because of the 10-run rule. Brian Stewart also had three hits and Chris Ferebee added two hits and three RBIs for Sepulveda (3-0).

Jared Sandler (2-0) went the distance for Sepulveda, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.

Quartz Hill 7, West Hills 4--Visiting Quartz Hill scored six runs in the ninth inning for a come-from-behind victory. West Hills (0-2) used three pitchers in the inning, but gave up five walks and three hits. Brian Powers had two hits, including a home run, and Casey Cote added a home run for West Hills.

Van Nuys West 12, Mission Hills 5--David Corleto had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs for host Van Nuys West (3-1).

Woodland Hills East 15, Littlerock 3--Stacy Kleiner had three hits, including a double and triple, and Warren Stewart added three hits for visiting Woodland Hills East. Gabe Kapler had two triples and two RBIs for Woodland Hills East (2-0).

Brandon Witkow (1-0) went four innings, allowing two hits and striking out three, to earn the victory.

Valley North 8, Lancaster South 1--David Tybor (1-0) scattered five hits and struck out 13 for host Valley North. Brian LaCour had three hits, including a double, triple and home run, and knocked in three runs, and Mark Lopez added two hits, two runs and two stolen bases for Valley North (2-0).

Granada Hills West 10, Lancaster North 6--Chris Ford hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and was three for four in a game at Edwards Air Force Base.

Verdugo Hills 14-4, Palmdale West 0-1--David Gantt pitched a two-hitter in the first game, which was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule, and Garrett Lee allowed four hits in six innings of the second game at Glendale High.

Kirk Hagge and John Lister each had two hits for Verdugo Hills in the first game.

DISTRICT 16

Westlake-Royal 12, Newbury Park 2--Todd Singleton struck out six in seven innings and David Vicari tossed two innings of hitless relief, striking out three for visiting Westlake-Royal.

Bryan Fernandez, Joe Mellinger, Chuck Hirsh, Brian Del Monte and Brew Johnson each had two hits for Westlake-Royal (2-0, 1-0 in district play).
