Toros’ Loss Is Lions’ Gain as Bergeron Says He Will Transfer

Cal State Dominguez Hills infielder Greg Bergeron, who led the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. in batting with a .403 average last season, said he is transferring to Loyola Marymount.

Bergeron, who will be a senior and have one year of eligibility remaining, said he received a release from the Dominguez Hills, which makes his eligible to play next season.

He is expected to play second base and bat leadoff for the Lions. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Bergeron played first base at Dominguez Hills.

Bergeron, who also considered UCLA and Cal State Fullerton, is looking forward to playing at the NCAA Division I level.

“It’s just something that I felt I wanted to do and I need to do it if I want to play at a higher level (in the pros) in the future,” Bergeron said. “There’s nothing against Dominguez Hills. I really enjoyed playing there. I just think I’ll have a better chance to go on in baseball if I show I can play Division I.”

He is familiar with the coaching of Loyola’s Jody Robinson.

“(He) coached at Cerritos College for a while and I played there before I went to Dominguez Hills, so I know a lot about him and what he expects from his players, and I think he’ll be a good coach to play for,” Bergeron said.

Bergeron also led the Toros with a .512 on-base percentage, 77 hits and 31 walks. He was hit by 18 pitches--second-most in Division II history.
