The storybook season of El Camino Real High pitcher-outfielder Randy Wolf again reached new heights when he was selected the City Section 4-A Division player of the year by a panel of sportswriters.

Wolf, a junior left-hander, led the Conquistadores to the 4-A title by earning a save in a 7-6 victory over Chatsworth on June 3 at Dodger Stadium.

In his first year of pitching at the varsity level, Wolf finished 11-1 with an earned-run average of 1.05. He had 118 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings and finished the season on a nearly untouchable plane.

Over his final 25 innings, Wolf allowed three hits, two of which did not leave the infield. He tossed a no-hitter against Taft in his final regular-season start and followed that outing with a perfect game against Banning in the playoffs.

Additionally, Wolf batted cleanup for El Camino Real and hit .338 with 27 runs batted in. The Conquistadores finished the season ranked third in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.

Wolf said pitching the perfect game and helping El Camino Real win the championship are his most fond memories of this season.

“Winning City was great and the perfect game is going to be there, also,” Wolf said. “I can still remember Justin Martin catching the last fly ball in the perfect game and I can still see the final strikeout in the City championship.”

Wolf is the second El Camino Real player to earn the honor, and the first outright. Right-handed pitcher Pat Treend was selected 4-A co-player of the year along with Reed McMackin of Chatsworth in 1990, the last time the Conquistadores played in the 4-A final.

Additionally, Wolf’s selection ended a two-year streak of players from outside the Valley winning the 4-A Division’s top honor. Mike Busby of Banning won in 1991 and Javier Mejia of University in 1992. A Valley player won or shared the award in each of the previous 20 years.

Four of Wolf’s teammates also made the team: Dan Cey, a senior shortstop, senior pitcher Kevin Szymanski, senior third baseman Justin Balser and junior outfielder Justin Martin. Cey is a two-time selection.

Kennedy landed three seniors on the team, the Nos. 3-4-5 batters in their potent lineup: first baseman Jeff Tagliaferri, outfielder Rick Nadeau and catcher David Bourne.

Monroe shortstop-pitcher Jorge Dorado, a senior, was named to the team for the third time. Teammate Joel Zamudio, a junior pitcher-first baseman, also was selected. Chatsworth outfielder Mark Lopez, a senior, was selected for the second time. Teammate Bryan LaCour, a junior shortstop, also earned a berth.

Taft senior Stacy Kleiner, another repeat pick, made the team as a utility player. Junior right-hander Carlos Velazco of Sylmar also was chosen.

Senior infielder Ron Battaglia of Verdugo Hills was the lone area selection in the 3-A Division.
