NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Duarte, Muir Runners Get 2nd Chance at State

The California Interscholastic Federation, persuaded by the outcry against its decision to cancel the state track and field championships two weeks ago, will stage the meet Saturday at Cerritos College.

The CIF had canceled the meet on June 5 because of rain.

Nathan Woods of Duarte High and Kenny Haslip of Muir are the top qualifiers from the San Gabriel Valley.

Woods qualified for the 800 meters with a winning time of 1 minute, 52.2 seconds at the Masters Meet. Haslip won the 300-meter hurdles in 37.11 seconds.

Other area athletes competing in the state meet include Muir’s Gerald Stamps, who is the top qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles; Nogales sprinter Kevin Devine; pole vaulter David Gehrke of Diamond Bar; girls’ 400-meter runner Asha Jayasinghe of Arcadia and long jumper Tamika Hart of Monrovia.

Several San Gabriel Valley-area high school teams will participate this weekend in the final rounds of the L.A. Watts Summer Games.

Pasadena plays Banning in boys’ basketball at 11 a.m. Saturday at Inglewood High. The winner plays Dominguez in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m.

Diamond Bar plays Morningside in girls’ basketball at 9 a.m. Saturday at Morningside. The winner plays either Garfield or Peninsula in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.

Muir plays Hart in football at 10 a.m. Sunday at Compton Community College. The winner plays Dominguez or Hawthorne for the championship at 2 p.m.

Glendora plays Chatsworth in baseball at noon Saturday at Veterans Park. The winner plays either Tustin or Redlands in the semifinals at 3 p.m.

Muir plays La Canada in boys’ soccer at 9 a.m. Saturday at North Torrance High. The winner plays either Peninsula or Sylmar at 1 p.m. Sierra Vista plays Millikan at 10:30 a.m. The winner plays either Claremont or Bell, who also play at 10:30 a.m.

In girls’ soccer at Griffith Park, Claremont plays Crescenta Valley and Pasadena Poly plays Peninsula at 9 a.m. Saturday. Winners meet in the semifinals. Arcadia plays El Toro at 11. The winner plays either Capistrano Valley or Torrance.

South Pasadena plays Fontana in water polo at 8 a.m. Saturday at Bell Gardens High for the right to play Chadwick or Lakewood. Muir plays La Quinta at 10 for the right to play Bell Gardens or Long Beach Poly.

Stacey Mayes of La Verne University has been selected NCAA Division III player of the year by the National Coaches Assn.

Mayes, a junior pitcher, led La Verne to the Division III national championships, where she struck out a division-record 14 batters during the Leopards’ 1-0 opening victory over Allegheny (Pa.).

Mayes had 210 strikeouts in 22 games for La Verne (32-10), which won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Tom Cano, baseball coach at La Salle High from 1979-1990, has been named coach at Pasadena City College.

Cano, who played at Pasadena in 1972, replaces Chuck Lyon, who had a 20-48 record in two seasons with the Lancers. Lyon will returnto his position as an assistant coach with the school’s football team.

Mitsue Tomoyasu and DeVon Edwards were named Cal Poly Pomona athletes of the year.

Tomoyasu, a senior outside hitter for the Broncos’ women’s volleyball team, was a first-team All-American and the player of the year in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. She is the school’s all-time leader in kills (1,010) and has several other offensive records.

Edwards, a sophomore, finished third in the 400 meters at the NCAA Division II championships in Abilene, Tex., to earn All-America honors. Edwards holds the school record in the event at 45.56 seconds.

Brian Mena of Cal Poly Pomona was selected second-team All-America.

Mena, a senior outfielder, batted .406 for the Broncos, who finished second in the CCAA and advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional at San Luis Obispo.

Mena, infielder Grant Stephens, outfielder Tom Eide and pitcher Shannon Albright were selected first-team All-CCAA by conference coaches.

The Foothill-Citrus Officials Assn. is seeking people who want to become high school football officials for the coming season.

The organization will have its first meeting Aug. 24 at West Covina High.

The Challengers Angling Club is seeking fisherman interested in joining the organization, which was established in 1953.

The club sponsors fishing trips monthly from February through October, and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month for dinner and a program at Covina Bowl in Covina.
