LEGION ROUNDUP : Montiel Lifts Valley North to 6-5 Victory

Tony Montiel had two doubles and drove in three runs to lead Valley North to a 6-5 victory over Woodland Hills East in an American Legion District 20 Western Division baseball game at Chatsworth High on Wednesday.

Montiel doubled in a run in the first inning to give Valley North a 2-1 lead and his one-out double in the second drove in two runs to give Valley North (4-0) a 5-1 advantage.

Mark Lopez had a hit, two runs scored and four stolen bases for Valley North, which used four pitchers in the game.

Brandon Witkow (1-1) took the loss for Woodland Hills East (3-1). He gave up seven hits and walked eight batters. He also had two hits and two RBIs.

In other District 20 games:

Encino 12, Palmdale West 7--First baseman Brad Wright and center fielder Brad Farlow each had three hits and five RBIs to lead Encino (1-4) in a Southern Division game at Valley College.

Shortstop Rich Gonzalez, who scored three runs, doubled home the first two runs in a five-run fourth inning that broke open a 4-4 tie. Second baseman Chris Crawley also had three hits for Encino.

Sun Valley 1, Burbank North 0--Noe Garcia pitched a three-hit shutout with two strikeouts and no walks for Sun Valley at Poly High.

Paco Hernandez drove in Luciano Cuevas with the game’s only run on a two-out single in the second. Jaime Cerna was two for three for Sun Valley (3-4). Brian Sindle allowed four hits for Burbank North (0-7).

Newhall-Saugus 2, Littlerock 1--Brian Eggleston singled in the seventh and came around on two errors, scoring the winning run in a Northern Division game at Saugus High.

Eggleston reached first an infield single and took second on a bad throw by the third baseman. Newhall-Saugus (5-1-1) sacrificed, and Eggleston scored when Littlerock pitcher Toine Jager made a bad throw trying to retire Eggleston at third.

Newhall-Saugus pitcher Steve Rogers pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts and one walk. The only run he allowed was a homer by John Hangee in the third inning.

Granada Hills West 14, West Hills 13--Phil Cohen tied the game with a grand slam in the fifth and Chris Ford singled home Dave Cipolla with the go-ahead run in the sixth in a Western Division game at Granada Hills High.

Brian Powers and Jason McLean hit back-to-back homers for West Hills (2-3) in an eight-run fifth inning. Josh Goldberg, who has allowed only one run in 14 innings, earned the victory in relief for Granada Hills West (3-1).

Panorama City 7, Van Nuys West 2--Joel Zamudio and Nate Laufer combined on a five-hitter for Panorama City in a Southern Division game at L.A. Baptist High.

Zamudio gave up one hit, struck out three and walked one in the first three innings. Laufer allowed four hits, struck out four and walked three in the final four innings. Laufer also had two hits and two RBIs.

Mission Hills 7, San Fernando 6--Shortstop Jamie Tyson had three hits and Jerry Najar struck out the final two batters with the tying run at second base to lead Mission Hills in a Southern Division contest at Alemany High.

Tony Picciotto had two hits, including a triple, for Mission Hills (1-4). Tony Cabrera and Javier Lozano each had two doubles for San Fernando (3-3).

Van Nuys South 7, Burbank South 5--Aaron Amitin’s two-run single in the fourth snapped a 4-4 tie and he added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to give Van Nuys South its final run in the Eastern Division game at Burroughs High.

Alberto Vasquez’s two-run double tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth for Van Nuys South (7-1).
