LOCAL NOTES : Laguna Beach Graduate Signs With Nebraska

David Crain, a former Laguna Beach High standout, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Nebraska next year.

Crain, a catcher at Riverside Community College the last two years, turned down offers from Texas Tech, St. Mary’s and Cal Baptist.

He graduated from Laguna Beach in 1989, earning all-county honors in baseball and cross-country.

Laguna Hills shortstop Brett Nista, Tustin third baseman Derek Baker and Capistrano Valley pitcher Peter Zamora have been invited to play in the U.S. Olympic Festival July 23-Aug. 1 in San Antonio.

Nista led the county in home runs this past season with 11 and Baker helped Tustin win the Southern Section Division II title.

Amy Bonacorsi, a Christ College Irvine women’s volleyball and softball player, has been selected to play volleyball at the World Scholar Athlete Games June 20-July 3 at the University of Rhode Island.

Bonacorsi, a five-sport letter winner at Monte Vista High in Spring Valley, has a 3.8 grade-point average at Christ College. Outstanding athletes with a GPA of at least 3.5 are eligible for the event, which will feature more than 500 athletes from around the world.

Capistrano Valley third baseman Brian Benner has signed with the San Francisco Giants and will report to the team’s rookie league squad in Arizona, Cougar Coach Bob Zamora said Wednesday. Benner turned down a baseball scholarship to Cal State Long Beach to turn professional, Zamora said.
