Three players from the region put together solid first-round scores Monday in the 82nd State Amateur men’s golf tournament in Monterey and remained in solid contention to make the 36-hole cut.

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, a three-time Southern California Golf Assn. amateur champion, fired a two-over-par 74 at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Corby Segal of Burbank, a former Cal State Northridge player, shot a two-over 74 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, as did Yukinori Miyashita of Simi Valley.

The trio was part of an 11-player logjam in 13th place. The field of 102, which was divided evenly over the Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill courses, will be pared to 32 after today’s second round.

The 32 advance to the match-play portion of the event, which begins Wednesday.

The 36-hole championship match is Friday.

David Saylor of West Hills shot 76 at Pebble Beach and Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks--who won the event a few days after graduating from Westlake High in 1990--shot 77 at Spyglass Hill.

Brothers Chad and Justin Wright of Ventura struggled. Chad, of Buena High, shot 81 at Pebble Beach and Justin, a junior at San Jose State, shot 86 at Spyglass. Kevin Riley of El Cajon birdied five of the first six holes en route to a 68 at Pebble Beach, the low round of the afternoon.

Craig Anderson of Fallbrook posted the best score of the day, 72, at Spyglass Hill.

The California Stars, a collection of high school standouts from the Valley region, on Monday defeated Washington, 2-0, to remain unbeaten after three rounds of pool play in the United States Soccer Federation West Regional at Albuquerque, N.M.

The Stars, all of whom are 16 or younger, will face Wyoming this morning. The winner of the pool will advance to the semifinals later tonight. The championship game is Wednesday.

Roberto Perez of Burroughs High scored both goals for the Stars.

Jay Rosen of Harvard-Westlake recorded his third consecutive shutout in goals for the Stars, who defeated both Colorado and Oregon, 2-0, in their first two games.

A memorial service for Canyon High football player Michael Pulliam is scheduled at 2 p.m. today at St. Marx Lutheran Church in San Fernando, said Coach Harry Welch of the Cowboys.

Pulliam, 15, died Thursday after he fell from the back of a moving pickup truck and struck his head on the street, authorities said.

In lieu of flowers, his family is requesting that contributions be made in their son’s name to the Canyon football booster club.

CIF officials were happy with the rescheduled finals of the State track and field meet Saturday at Cerritos College.

They said 88% of the qualifiers participated in the finals, which had been canceled June 5 because of heavy rain. Many events had full fields.

Thomas Byrnes, CIF commissioner, had estimated that the state office would lose $40,000 by canceling the finals. Although figures are not available, that loss should drop significantly, even though the CIF had to help pay for travel and lodging costs last weekend.

“Any money lost will come out of reserves,” spokesman Jim Duel said.

The average attendance for the State meet is about 15,000 for two days, but after the cancellation and sudden rescheduling this year, it was only 11,000. Saturday’s crowd of 5,300 for the finals was the smallest in years.
