NOTEBOOK : 6 Represent Charter Oak on All-Star Football Roster

Fifty nine recent graduates from 29 San Gabriel Valley high schools are among the 79 players that will participate in an all-star football game July 16 at Citrus College.

Lou Farrar of Charter Oak will coach the East team and Bob Rau of Buena Park will coach the West in the 14th annual Hall of Fame game.

The East leads the series, 8-3-2.

Charter Oak is represented by six players, including All-Southern Section running back-defensive back Mike Harris. Duarte, where Rau coached last season, is also represented by six players, including All-Southern Section quarterback Greg Ainsworth.

Jesus Peinado, a pitcher and shortstop for the Bishop Amat High baseball team last season, and pitcher Christy Tucker and catcher Shari Shultz of the Charter Oak softball team were selected first-team All-State by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.

Jill Matyuch of Charter Oak was selected coach of the year after guiding her team to a 29-0-1 record and the Division II championship in her first season.

Peinado, the Southern Section Division III player of the year, helped lead Bishop Amat to a 27-1 record. He was 11-0 with a 2.12 earned-run average and batted .474.

Tucker, the Division II player of the year, was 28-0-1. Shultz batted .329.

Teri Corwin has been named softball coach at Azusa Pacific University, replacing Doug Barnett, who left to become football coach at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont.

Azusa Pacific also announced the hiring of Gary Pine as director of promotions and media relations. Pine, the sports information director at Azusa Pacific from 1984-89, returns to the school after working for USC and the Big West Conference.

Pine replaces Nick Dawson, who will become sports information director at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.

Azusa Pacific will play host to the 1994 National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. outdoor track and field championships. The event is scheduled for May 25-27.

Azusa Pacific, which has won nine of the last 12 men’s championships, played host to the NAIA national meet in 1988 and 1989.

The Foothill-Citrus Officials Assn. is seeking new members who want to become high school football officials.

Officials can earn up to $43 a game. The organization will have its first meeting Aug. 24 at West Covina High.
