AMERICAN LEGION ROUNDUP : Valley North Rallies Past Granada Hills West Twice, 8-3 and 7-6

With Jim DeBiase pitching a six-hitter in the first game and Bryan LaCour adding four hits in the second, Valley North swept Granada Hills West, 8-3 and 7-6, in an American Legion District 20 Western Division doubleheader at Chatsworth High on Saturday.

The victories were the third in a row for North (16-1), which suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday against West Hills.

North trailed, 3-1, after five innings in the first game, but scored six runs in the sixth. North trailed, 6-5, after 6 1/2 innings in the second game before scoring twice for another come-from-behind victory.

Lancaster North 2-0, Newhall Saugus 1-1--Allen Paisano (3-2) pitched a six-hitter for Lancaster North (6-10) in the opener of a Northern Division doubleheader at Rosamond High.

Jessie Perez (1-1) pitched a one-hitter in the second game, but Newhall Saugus (11-4-1) won with an unearned run in the sixth. Lucas Soloman (1-1) threw a three-hitter for Newhall Saugus.

Verdugo Hills 10, Van Nuys West 0--Jason Greenberg (2-1) threw a four-hitter and Dan Bir had three hits for Verdugo Hills (14-1) in a Southern Division game shortened to seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

Encino 10, San Fernando 4--Brad Farlow had four hits, four RBIs and two steals for Encino (8-8) in a Southern Division game.

San Fernando (6-11) committed seven errors.

Las Virgenes 5-7, West Hills 0-2--David Jacobs had four hits and two RBIs in the first game, and Chris Cicuito, Matt Gershon and Mehul Taylor each added two hits in the second game to give Las Virgenes a sweep in Western Division play.

Billy Hoover had two hits and two RBIs for Las Virgenes (9-6) in the opener, and Jason Warren (3-0) pitched a three-hitter.

Panorama City 10-5, Sepulveda 0-15--Darryl Dent had four hits, including two doubles, four runs and four steals in the second game, to help give Sepulveda a split of a Southern Division doubleheader.

Chris Ferebee had two hits, four runs and three RBIs and Brad Fullmer added a home run, three runs and three RBIs for Sepulveda (10-7) in the second game.

Palmdale West 8-10, Mission Hills 3-9--Casey Cheshier squeezed home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap then Jon Starlee’s RBI single gave Palmdale West a sweep of the Southern Division doubleheader.

Jeff Tepper drove in four runs with a double and home run in the opener for Palmdale West (5-11).

Lancaster South 20-23, Quartz Hill 19-10--Chris Tapia hit for the cycle and drove in six runs as Lancaster South pounded out 25 hits in the second game of a Northern Division doubleheader.

Earlier, Ty Aponte’s sacrifice fly drove in the go-ahead run for Lancaster South (10-7) in the 10th inning of a game suspended because of darkness June 6 with the score tied, 19-19.

North Hollywood 18, Van Nuys South 8--Eddie Gonzalez had three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs for North Hollywood in the Eastern Division game which was called after 6 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Newbury Park 12, Conejo 7--Ray Clinton, Kevin Tortoricci and Dustin Tubb each had three hits to power Newbury Park in the District 16 game.

Trailing, 6-0, after two innings, Newbury Park (7-5) narrowed the deficit to 7-4 after seven innings before scoring five runs in the top of the eighth. Paul Bonds’ two-run single keyed the uprising.

Newbury Oaks 16, Oxnard 6--Andy Wilson had four hits, scored four runs, drove in another and stole two bases for Newbury Oaks (9-5) in the District 16 game.

Jason Lightfoot added two hits, including a three-run homer that capped a five-run first.

Camarillo B 6-5, Westlake-Royal 4-6--Dave Brown’s single snapped a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game and gave Westlake-Royal (8-4) a District 16 split.
