Nancy Evans, who was 78-17 in four seasons at Hoover High, paced Gordon’s Panthers to their fourth championship in five years in the Hall of Fame Tournament in Oklahoma City last weekend.

Evans gave up one hit in 19 innings during the tournament, striking out 35 and walking three while winning three games. The right-hander pitched a no-hitter against the Pirettes in the championship game, an 8-0 victory called after five innings because of an eight-run mercy rule. Evans struck out eight and walked none in the championship game.

Simi Valley High’s Sara Griffin, the Southern Section’s Division I player of the year, took the loss for the Pirettes, whose only losses in the 16-team tournament came against Evans and the Panthers. Griffin tossed a four-hitter in an earlier loss to the Panthers, but was tagged for 12 hits in the final.

The Panthers and the Pirettes earned berths in the National Championship tournament in Visalia, Calif., Aug. 11-15.

The Simi Valley All-Stars from the Simi Valley Girls Softball League earned a berth in the 12-and-under National Championship tournament in Longview, Wash., Aug. 13-15, after finishing second in last weekend’s qualifying tournament in Artesia.
