Valley Stars Show Their Stuff One Last Friday Night : Football: High school standouts meet at Birmingham High before moving on.

Deriek Charles felt a jolt.

The impact of what was about to happen hit the former standout Hart High running back like an angry linebacker.

After a recent practice for the Daily News all-star game (at 6:30 tonight at Birmingham High), several players swapped war stories and reminisced about fleeting moments of glory. It was then Charles realized fully what he was leaving behind.

“All of the guys were talking about it,” Charles said. “We all started thinking about all the fun we had on Friday nights and how that was all gone now.

“I feel good about moving on, but it’s still kind of tough. I’m really looking forward to this game.”

Tonight’s game will mark the last time Charles--The Times’ Valley back of the year--and 69 other recent high school graduates will represent their schools in organized play. The game features top players from schools in Burbank and Glendale and the Antelope, Conejo, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Simi valleys.

Players are placed on teams representing the East and West. The San Diego Freeway serves as the dividing line. The East defeated the West, 7-0, in last season’s game.

Hart’s Mike Herrington and North Hollywood’s Gary Gray are co-coaches of the East team, Herrington leading the offense and Gray the defense. Taft’s Troy Starr directs the West offense and L.A. Baptist’s Mark Bates handles the defense.

Charles, Hart teammate Davis Delmatoff and Terrence Zenno of Palmdale are among the players who give Herrington flexibility on offense. Charles, a tailback, rushed for 1,133 yards and 15 touchdowns and had 44 receptions for 757 yards and another eight touchdowns.

In his first season as a starting varsity quarterback, Delmatoff finished third in the state with 3,196 yards passing. He led the state with 36 touchdown passes.

Zenno, also a quarterback, was one of the area’s most dangerous players on offense. He passed for 2,067 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also led Palmdale in rushing with 631 yards and 10 touchdowns.

George Brazil of City Section 4-A Division champion Sylmar anchors the East defense. The outside linebacker is a standout against the run.

The West’s Eric Bennett of Simi Valley finished No. 4 among state passing leaders with 3,094 yards. His 34 touchdown passes placed him third in that category.

Tailback Justin Giovannettone of Chaminade rushed for 1,474 yards and 22 touchdowns. Fellow tailback Torie Lee of Crespi totaled 1,168 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Defensive lineman Faio Emelio of Granada Hills should be a force up front.
