Family Night for Huberts at Ventura

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Gary Hubert has been dominant in the Mini Stock division at Ventura Raceway this season and his wife, Jan, is a novice driver in the new Pony Stock division.

The Camarillo racers are equally proud of each other after Jan’s Friday night performance at Ventura, during which she finally put it all together to win both the Pony Stock 10-lap oval and figure-eight main events.

Jan Hubert broke her two-month main-event drought in the figure-eight race with a flag-to-flag victory. Hubert’s only main-event win of the season came in a figure-eight race on May 15.

Hubert’s victory also broke the domination of that Pony Stock event by Scott Boucher of Oak View and Jody Houchin of Ventura, who between them won seven of the last eight figure-eight mains.

Hubert then came back later to win the 10-lap oval main event for the first time this season and once again broke the domination of Boucher and Houchin, who split the previous eight oval main events this year.

Hubert went inside of Tayo Sahagan of Oxnard on the opening lap and led the rest of the way. Jim Jewett of Oxnard was second and Mira Cook of Camarillo was third.

The Hubert family continued to shine as Gary, Mini Stock oval track season points leader, came from sixth position on the starting grid to take the lead from Cliff Tietz of Camarillo on Lap 2 and go on to win the 15-lap main event for the seventh time this season. No other driver in that division has more than one main event victory.

Gary Hubert also powered away from the pack to win an eight-lap Mini Stock heat race. Dunson won the other Mini heat with a wire-to-wire victory.

Scott Pounds of Santa Maria moved from third to the lead on the first lap and was never headed in the IMCA Modified 15-lap main.

Scott Olson of Ventura won the Street Stock figure-eight main event for the first time this season. Randy Gens of Oxnard was second and Tom Stephens of Ventura maintained his season points lead with a third place finish.

Joe Silva of Port Hueneme won the Mini Stock figure-eight main event for the fifth time this season to maintain his season points lead over second place finisher Gary Swenson of Port Hueneme.

James Weston of Santa Barbara nipped Scott Niven by one-half car-length to win a Street Stock heat race. Other Street heat winners were Olson and Adail Gayhart of Malibu.

Cole and Pounds each won an IMCA Modified heat race.

Jewett, making his first appearance of the season in the Pony Stock division, drove his daughter Tracy’s car to a heat victory.

Swenson won a four-lap Trophy Dash, his fifth victory of the season in the Mini Stock division, and Paul Moore of Oxnard won in the Street Stocks.
