NOTEBOOK : Hebron Succeeds Fiege as Belmont Sports Director

Jeff Hebron has been selected athletic director at Belmont High School, replacing Barbara Fiege, who resigned last month.

Fiege, the Sentinels’ athletic director for seven years, left her position to succeed Hal Harkness as the City Section athletic commissioner. She will start that job in October.

Hebron has served as Fiege’s assistant for five years at Belmont.

“I feel the transition will be a smooth one,” Fiege said. “Jeff has done everything he has been called upon to do. Even though experience is the best teacher, I think Jeff will do a fine job.”

Trial postponed--The trial of former Los Angeles Dodger player and Dorsey High School baseball Coach Derrel Thomas on narcotics charges has been postponed until July 28.

Thomas, who was charged with conspiring to sell, buy and transport cocaine, was scheduled to go on trial starting last Monday in Superior Court.

Thomas was a walk-on baseball coach at Dorsey when he was arrested last April. He was released on his own recognizance and fired April 27 as the Dons coach.

Football all-star games--Practice begins Monday for the Chris Mims/Los Angeles Prep Senior Bowl, scheduled for July 30 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach.

Mims was a 1992 first-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers and part-time starter at defensive end. The former Dorsey High and L.A. Southwest College standout has sponsored the Senior Bowl for two seasons. He was the 1987 Senior Bowl defensive player.

Players from Crenshaw, Dorsey, Los Angeles and Loyola highs have been selected to play for the South-West team. Players from Fremont, Jefferson, Jordan, Locke, Manual Arts, Verbum Dei and Washington will be used to form the North-East team.

Final rosters will be announced after next week’s workouts.

Add all-stars--The Los Angeles West All-Stars met the San Gabriel Valley East All-Stars Saturday night in the third annual Fiesta Bowl Football game at Wilson High School.

Scheduled to compete for the West seniors were: running back William Mendez of Bell, receiver Marcelo Ortega of Lincoln and quarterback Gerald Valdivia of Cathedral.

Ortega led the area in receptions (71), was second in yards receiving (1,085), and first in scoring (96 points). Valdivia threw for 1,387 yards and 10 touchdowns, and Mendez ran for 851 yards and 11 touchdowns as a part-time running back.

Competing for the West defense were: Robert Anaya of Belmont; Juan Andrade of Lincoln; Felix Banuelos of Lincoln; Rafael Barraza of Lincoln; Armando Bravo of Huntington Park; Art Cardona of Garfield; Juan Hernandez of Garfield; Anthony Lopez of Garfield; Richard Mendoza of Belmont and Israel Orozco of Belmont.

The West offense included: Richard Capra of Belmont; George Conreras of Garfield; Yarlen Coresa of Lincoln; Vincent Delgado of Bell; Felipe Escartin of South Gate; William Han of Belmont; John Lopez of Roosevelt; Anthony Martinez of Salesian; Steven Medina of South Gate; Magin Munoz of Belmont; Mario Ramirez of Lincoln; Mark Saucedo of Huntington Park; Jose Turrbiartes of South Gate and Jesus Verdiell of Loyola.

Swimming--Helen Salcedo of Bell High turned in an impressive performance for the Bellflower Aquatic team last weekend in the Janet Evans Invitational at USC.

Although Salcedo did not win an event, she reached the finals in two individual races and swam in one relay finals.

Salcedo swam 2:44.28 to take fifth in the 200-meter breaststroke on July 11. She also swam a 1:16.78 to place fifth in the 100 breaststroke and swam a leg on the Bellflower 400 medley relay team, which placed fifth in 4:37.70.
