PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Long Continues to Sit Out Camp

Share

Defensive end Howie Long, insistent on renegotiating his contract, was a no-show for the second consecutive day at the Raider training camp Saturday at Oxnard.

With their abundance of young talent on the defensive line, one source indicated that the Raiders haven’t ruled out trading Long, rather than acceding to his wishes.

Long, 33, was the team’s highest-paid player last season after signing a contract extension for $8.33 million over a five-year span.

Long now says he feels underpaid at $1.5 million for this season and that he is determined to sit out until his contract is renegotiated.

Long, a 12-year veteran coming off one of his best seasons as a pro, says his contract is out of date because of the recent boom in salaries caused by free agency.

One problem he might have with his holdout is that Raider owner Al Davis has a long history of standing firm in such cases.

On Friday, a disgruntled Tim Brown reported on time to camp because he said that he did not want to be handled like Marcus Allen and Steve Beuerlein, veteran players who suffered in their holdouts with the Raiders.

Long’s contract calls for him to make $1.8 million next season and $1.98 million the following year.

Two more veteran players reached agreement with the Raiders in defensive back Torin Dorn and wide receiver Willie Gault. Dorn will practice today, and Gault will be excused for personal reasons.

The Raiders still have three veterans left unsigned--wide receiver Sam Graddy, linebacker Aaron Wallace and tight end Andrew Glover. They also have not reached agreement with draft choices Patrick Bates, Orlanda Truitt and 1991 draft choice Raghib (Rocket) Ismail.

The Raiders signed free-agent linebacker Keith Traylor, who played with the Denver Broncos the last two seasons.
