PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Holdout to Be Costly

Share

Defensive end Howie Long skipped his third day of training camp at Oxnard on Sunday and Coach Art Shell said that it is going to cost him. “He’s going to have to pay a nice little fine,” Shell said. “Each day he misses will cost him $4,000. The (league) put that in to help get guys into camp.”

If Long’s holdout continues past the Raiders’ first preseason game July 31 against the Green Bay Packers, it will also cost him one regular-season game check. “That really makes (holding out) a big decision,” Shell said. “But I’m not really thinking about that. I’m more interested in people here.”

For the first time since training camp began, the Raiders worked out in full uniform for two practices in one day. Shell had previously restricted at least one practice each day to shoulder pads and shorts. “We wanted to get some good work in with pads,” Shell said. “The big thing is that everyone came into camp in outstanding shape.”

Six Raiders sat out at least one practice because of injuries Sunday. Linebackers Joe Kelly and Winston Moss sat out the afternoon practice to rest minor ailments, along with cornerback Dennis Johnson, who had an ankle sprain. Tight end David Jones sat out for the third day because of a broken nose, but is expected to practice today.
