LOCAL NOTES : Booth Takes Medalist Honors at Tournament

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza was the medalist in Monday’s qualifying round for the Women’s Western Golf Assn.’s 67th national junior championship at the Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind.

Booth had a one-over-par 73 on the 5,898-yard layout. Alicia Allison shot 81 and also advanced to match play, which starts today and continues through Friday.

Last week, Booth won the Rolex Tournament of Champions junior golf tournament in Roswell, Ga.

The Tustin Red Sox beat the Montebello Stars, 9-8, at Saddleback College to win the Southern California championship of the American Amateur Baseball Congress in the 13- to 14-year-olds division. The Red Sox advance to the Pacific regional playoffs Aug. 7-10 in Pico Rivera.

Steven Lievanos had a sacrifice fly to break a 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh for Tustin, which went 5-0 in the tournament. Ryan France opened the inning with a bunt single and went to third on a single by Dan Trujillo before Lievanos’ game-winning fly ball.

Jason Bilbruch has been named girls’ volleyball coach at Marina High School, Athletic Director Larry Doyle said Monday.

Bilbruch, who also heads the boys’ program, replaces Ben Lefrancois, who resigned to pursue another career opportunity.

Five Orange County high school water polo teams have qualified for the National Junior Olympics, Aug. 8-14 at De Anza College.

Capistrano Valley, Corona del Mar, El Toro, Newport Harbor and Sunny Hills advanced from the Southern Pacific Water Polo 17-and-under qualifying tournament over the weekend.

Mike Batesole, a five-year assistant in the community college ranks, has been hired as assistant baseball coach at Cal State Northridge, Matador Coach Bill Kernen said Monday.

Batesole, 29, comes to Northridge from Cypress College, where he was an assistant for one season under Scott Pickler. The four previous seasons, he was an assistant for Mike Mayne at Orange Coast College.

Batesole replaces Stan Sanchez, who resigned at mid-season last spring to become coach at Southern Colorado.

A graduate of Garden Grove High, Batesole played three seasons at third base for Oral Roberts, then spent five years in the Dodger organization, advancing as far as double-A San Antonio.
