Wilfred Yago of Ventura won top honors over the weekend in the first handicap flight of the Ventura City Men’s Golf Championship at Buenaventura and Olivas Park golf courses.

Yago finished the 36-hole event with a net 134 to edge Norman Ray of Canoga Park by four shots. Ron Tunik of Newbury Park won the second flight with a net 130, beating Greg Kountz of Ventura by three strokes.

John Clay of Ventura won the third flight with a net 130. Joe Schoolle of Camarillo and Chuck Chenery of Ventura tied for second at 134.

Alan Stearns of Camarillo won the championship flight by five shots with rounds of 70 and 69.

Scott Golditch of Northridge, a senior at Taft High, shot 36-38--74 to place third in the American Junior Golf Assn.’s First Coast Junior Classic at Windsor Parke Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

Golditch finished two shots behind Sal Spallone of Vero Beach, Fla. Art Weiner of Sherman Oaks, another Taft senior, missed the cut after a first-round 80.

Baseball

First-year St. Francis High Coach Tim O’Neil announced he has added assistants Bob Hernandez and Eric Hagge to his staff. Hernandez has been an assistant the past three seasons at Crespi.

Hagge, a 1989 graduate of St. Francis, is a former Cal State Hayward player.

Pitcher Jeff Suppan of Crespi High and infielder Brad Fullmer of Montclair Prep were named first-team All-American by Baseball America.

Suppan was 11-1 with a 0.92 earned-run average and 127 strikeouts in 91 innings. He batted .480 with 10 doubles, 11 home runs and 51 runs batted in. Fullmer, selected as a designated hitter, batted .568 with 11 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs and 62 RBIs.

Football

Antelope Valley College has commitments from eight players--lineman Scott Ralston, linebacker Daryl Wustrack and quarterback Travis Sabadin of Highland High; linebacker Eric McQuown of Antelope Valley; lineman Craig Baily of Littlerock; defensive back Russell Gordon of Rosamond; running back Idanre Anderson of Quartz Hill and linebacker Joseph Choate of Tehachapi.

Cycling

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys finished fourth and Shawn Cronkhite of Chatsworth was 12th in the Lakefront Road Race in Milwaukee, part of the Miller Lite Superweek Tour of Wisconsin.
