Wright Shoots 73, Slips to Second

Chad Wright of Ventura shot a one-over-par 73 Friday to tie for second in the Junior World Golf Championships at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.

Wright finished at seven-under 281, three shots back of winner Patrick Perez of Cardiff, who had a 69 after trailing Wright by a shot at the end of three rounds.

Gilberto Morales of Venezuela, the division’s defending champion, tied with Wright after shooting 70.

Darren Angel of Northridge fired a 68 to place fifth at 288.

The top seven finishers play in the Japan Cup next month.

Soccer

Roberto Perez of Burroughs High had two goals and an assist to lead the California Stars to a 3-1 victory over Potomac (Md.) Alliance in the boys’ 16-and-under semifinals of the U.S. Soccer Federation national championships in Phoenix.

Rafael Reyes, who played at San Fernando, scored 33 seconds into the match on assists from Perez and Brian Angelini of Harvard-Westlake. Late in the half, Perez scored on an assist from Louie Castro of Cleveland for a 2-0 lead. Perez scored again 30 seconds into the second half. Goalkeeper Jay Rosen of Harvard made 12 saves.

The Stars play Michigan Vardar today for the Niotis Cup.

Track & Field

Ty Gaines, who placed fourth in the boys’ triple jump in last month’s state championships for Palmdale High, will attend Bakersfield College.

Gaines was fourth in the Southern Section Masters Meet with leap of 50 feet 1 3/4 inches.
