Beach Volleyball Served Up at Ross Snyder Park

Fifty youngsters who spent part of the summer learning volleyball took part in a beach volleyball tournament sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation Wednesday at Ross Snyder Park in South-Central.

The 11- to 17-year-olds were introduced to beach volleyball by the foundation in cooperation with the city Department of Recreation and Parks. Steve Anderson--one of the first African-Americans in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals--and Jeff Rodgers, also a member, lent their expertise as coaches, instructors and role models. Teams from six parks participated.

“Volleyball is a sport that has grown in popularity on both coasts of the United States as well as on beaches around the world,” foundation program director Keith Cruickshank said.

“The (foundation) is dedicated to providing sports opportunities for all young people throughout Southern California, and is making it possible for children from the center of Los Angeles to get exposure to this popular sport.”
