Rob McGill has resigned as baseball coach at Los Alamitos High School because of personal reasons, Assistant Principal Jerry Halpin said Tuesday.

The Griffins had a record of 32-45-1 under McGill the past three seasons.

Los Alamitos was 15-11-1 in 1993 and finished second in the Empire League. The Griffins lost to Lakewood in the first of the Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Defending champion Alicia Allison of Santa Ana shot 83 Tuesday in the first round of the Betsy Rawls Girls’ Championship in Wilmington, Del.

Allison, who will be a senior at Foothill High in the fall, shot 38-45 on the 6,015-yard, par-72 Hercules Country Club course. She is 13 strokes behind leader Caroline Culler of Miami Springs, Fla.

Rajai Espinosa, the two-time South Coast League champion in the 1,600 from Dana Hills High, signed a letter of intent to run for Cal State Northridge, Matador Coach Don Strametz announced.

Espinosa, 5 feet 5 and 120 pounds, was a four-year captain at Dana Hills, winning the league mile championship in 1991 and 1992.

The 12th Race Across America, a 2,909-mile bicycle race that winds on the backroads from Irvine to Savannah, Ga., starts at 11 a.m. today at the Holiday Inn in Irvine.

The women’s, tandem and senior men’s divisions will start today. The men’s race will begin Friday and four-man men’s teams will start Sunday.

With his sixth-place finish in the boys’ 13-under three-meter competition at the recent U.S. Diving Zone D championships, Laguna Hills’ Robbie Quinn qualified for the Junior Olympic nationals Aug. 4-9 in Pasadena. Quinn, 11, dives for Crown Valley Divers but competed unattached at the zone meet.
