Wide receiver Mark Duper, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was released by the Cincinnati Bengals. Duper, 34, was signed by the Bengals last month when the Miami Dolphins waived him after 11 seasons.

Offensive tackle Jim Lachey, a three-time All-Pro who was the anchor of the Washington Redskins’ offensive line, was found to have a torn ligament in his left knee that will probably sideline him for the season.

Boomer Esiason, acquired by the New York Jets from the Bengals on March 17 for two draft picks, was designated the Jets’ starting quarterback, beating out Browning Nagle, last season’s starter.

Michael Carter, who was expected to strengthen Philadelphia’s run defense, retired. Carter, 32, was has been bothered by soreness in both knees and an aching shoulder.
