Running back Terry Allen, who rushed for 1,201 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings last season, will sit out the season after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery. . . . Offensive tackle Jumbo Elliott, the New York Giants’ franchise player, signed a three-year contract and said his main objective is to learn the offensive system of new Coach Dan Reeves. Elliott, the last Giant to come to terms for the 1993 season, signed a contract worth about $2 million per year. . . . The Detroit Lions picked up defensive help with the signing of cornerback Tim McKyer, but veteran linebacker Michael Cofer was put on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list because of a knee injury. . . . The Kansas City Chiefs announced that veteran running back Barry Word has signed a one-year contract. . . . Quarterback Troy Aikman, who underwent back surgery two months ago, is expected to start for the Dallas Cowboys tonight in an exhibition game against the Houston Oilers at San Antonio. “I am concerned about it, but our guys have done a good job pass protection-wise,” Coach Jimmy Johnson said.
