Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero became the leading candidate for 3-year-old of the year by winning the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

Sea Hero also became the first since Shutout in 1942 to win the Derby and the Travers.

Sea Hero, ridden by Jerry Bailey, took the lead from Southland-based Devoted Brass and Belmont Stakes winner Colonial Affair near the eighth pole and beat Kissin Kris by two lengths. Kissin Kris was a length ahead of Miner’s Mark, who was a head in front of Colonial Affair.

“I couldn’t be more delighted,” said Paul Mellon, Sea Hero’s 85-year-old owner who won his fifth Travers after having won his first Derby.

Completing the order of finish after Colonial Affair were Devoted Brass, Wallenda, Cherokee Run, Wild Gale, Silver Of Silver, Fox Trail and El Bakan.
