Paul Kollar, whose boys’ soccer teams at Ocean View High won five Sunset League championships in the last 15 years, recently announced his resignation as coach.

James Barrot, an assistant the last two seasons, will succeed Kollar, who will continue to teach Spanish at the school.

Kollar said he left prep coaching to spend more time with his family and concentrate on coaching the men’s team at Golden West College. He also is a consultant for the Amateur Athletic Foundation at its annual soccer coaching institute.

The Seahawks compiled a 204-83-54 record under Kollar, including trips to the Southern Section playoffs in all but two years. They won the 4-A championship in 1992 and reached the semifinals in ’84 and ’93. Kollar was selected to coach in the Orange County all-star game three times.

Julie Slattery, who was to coach the girls’ junior varsity tennis team this fall at Corona del Mar High, will replace Ellen Bryant as varsity coach, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick announced.

Bryant, who led the Sea Kings (15-5) to a second-place finish in the Sea View League and the Southern Section Division I quarterfinals in her one year as coach, has accepted a promotion at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Slattery, an Edison High graduate, was the 1992 national Division II senior player of the year at Cal Poly Pomona and the winner of three State championships while at Orange Coast College.

Salsa goalie Ian Feuer, who injured his knee July 18 in an exhibition against Guadalajara of Mexico and re-injured the knee in practice last week, underwent surgery Monday. He is expected to miss three weeks.

With Feuer out and reserve goalie Mike Littman sidelined with a sprained ankle, the Salsa has only one healthy goalie on the roster, former Cal State Fullerton standout Bob Ammann.

Salsa General Manager Rick Davis said he has petitioned the American Professional Soccer League to allow the Salsa a two-week injury provision to sign a fourth goalie. League rules allow a player to be signed beyond the July 5 roster deadline if a season-ending injury has occurred.

The Salsa’s regular season ends Sept. 12. “Unfortunately, at this point, we don’t know how long either Ian or Mike will need to recover,” Davis said.
