SPORTSCOPE : Davenport Advances to 4th-Round at Open

Lindsay Davenport, a former Chadwick High player, will meet 1990 champion Gabriela Sabatini in a fourth-round U.S. Open match today at the National Tennis Center in New York City.

Davenport, who is 24th on the Virginia Slims singles rankings, earned the right to play fifth-seeded Sabatini by defeating 15th-seeded Amanda Coetzer, 6-1, 6-2, Friday.

“I was consistent with my ground strokes and I served well,” Davenport said. “It all worked today.”

Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills lost to 10th-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, after leading, 3-1, in the second set. This is third consecutive year Po has lost in the third round.

In men’s doubles, former Miraleste player Jorge Lozano and partner Kelly Jones of Escondido upset fifth-seeded Australians Mark Kratzmann and Wally Masur, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Cammy MacGregor, a 1987 Palos Verdes High graduate, lost her second-round women’s doubles match. MacGregor and partner Shaun Stafford of Gainesville, Fla., were eliminated by fifth-seeded Pam Shriver and Australian Elizabeth Smylie, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

For the second consecutive year, Karch Kiraly was named pro beach volleyball’s most valuable player by his peers in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist also won the honor in 1990. This year he teamed with Kent Steffes to win 16 events and $399,878 in prize money. Kiraly also was named top offensive player.

Brazilian Jose Loiola was named rookie of the year and Adam Johnson was best defensive player.

Larry Mear was sportsman of the year and Bruk Vandeweghe received the most-improved player award.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team won the Anteater Invitational Saturday by defeating UC Irvine, 15-11, 15-10, 12-15, 15-5.

The Lions beat Wichita Sate, 15-6, 15-5, 15-11, earlier Saturday. On Friday, Loyola defeated Oregon, 15-8, 15-10, 15-11.

The Lions play host to Cal State Northridge on Tuesday.

Senior midfielder Jennifer Womack scored 47 seconds into the game to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran on Saturday in Carson.

Senior forward Dena Telfair added a goal with 21 minutes remaining and All-America candidate Teresa Bateman scored with 14 minutes left for the Toros.

Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Foote earned her first career shutout.

Dominguez Hills plays San Francisco State this morning at 11.

The men’s team lost its opener to Northridge, 3-1, on Saturday.
