Ray Seay, the boys’ track and field coach at Buena High, has taken over the boys’ cross-country program, replacing Steve Blum.

Seay, 46, has coached numerous sports at Buena since being hired as a teacher at his alma mater in 1971.

He was the wrestling coach from 1971-86, a football assistant from 1973-87, and a track assistant since the mid-’70s.

He was an assistant football coach at Ventura College from 1988-92 before turning his attention to track and cross-country.

“I definitely miss football,” Seay said. “I miss the on-the-field stuff and working with the kids. It was the off-the-field hours which were required that I had grown tired of. That’s one of the main reasons for the change.”

Seay takes over a boys’ team that has won two consecutive Channel League titles and seven of the last 10. The Bulldogs placed fifth in the 1991 state Division I championships.

Blum, who also coached the boys’ team in 1990, is entering his 11th season as the girls’ coach.

Girls’ Basketball

Jack Sunderlik has resigned as girls’ basketball coach at St. Genevieve High for personal reasons, Athletic Director Richard Fong said.

Sunderlik will remain as a biology teacher at the school. Fong said he hopes to have a walk-on coach in place by Nov. 1.
